Sarabhai, what is today ASE, has its genesis in diverse companies promoted by the late Mr. Ambalal Sarabhai whose business acumen and progressive ideals made him a leading industrial player in India.

Ambalal Sarabhai vigorously pursued a policy of industrial development, seeking out the most modern textile manufacturing technologies internationally to adopt in the Sarabhai textile mill companies, an investment that quickly repaid itself and catapulted the company.

In the 1930s and 40s, Ambalal Sarabhai entered diverse fields and expanded its presence around the country while continually employing the strategy of improvement and innovation including newer technologies.

The business branched out into sectors such as oil, sugar, detergents and soaps, electronic sub-assemblies, mechanical components, all conforming to the stringent quality standards for which the Sarabhais came to be known. Indian independence from the British in 1947 ushered in a new era and with it a great need for self-sufficient local production. The Sarahbais seized this opportunity setting in motion their rapid growth to meet the needs of a fledgling nation. Many of these enterprises represented pioneer ventures in fields which till then had been dominated by foreign companies. A comprehensive national distribution network was created to make consumer and industrial products available to the remotest corners of the vast and predominantly rural country of India.

Founder & Father of India’s Space Program

Vikram Sarabhai was a formidable scientist and visionary leader. Parallel to his work building the burgeoning pharmaceutical sector, he helped organize the application of space science in India.

He is widely regarded as the father of India’s space programme—and was instrumental in the formation of the Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad), the premier management school in India, and other leading institutions to serve as a platform for science to propel development forward in the country.

He is widely regarded as the father of India’s space programme—and was instrumental in the formation of the Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad), the premier management school in India, and other leading institutions to serve as a platform for science to propel development forward in the country.

When Vikram Sarabhai became the chairman of the Atomic Commision of India in 1966, He handed over the business to his elder brother - Gautam Sarabhai. Besides managing the entire sarabhai portfolio of companies, Gautam Sarabhai also revived the philosophy of the Bauhaus design movement which was based on learning by doing.

Based on the recommendations made in the India Report, the Government of India with the assistance of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was originally called as an autonomous all-India body in September 1961 at Ahmedabad. Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira played a major role in the establishment and early years of National Institute of India (NID), Ahmedabad.

The management consolidated the activities being carried out in different corporate identities, and on 27th June 1977 formally established Ambalal Sarabhai Enterprises Limited (ASE).
For further expansion and diversification of these amalgamated Sarabhai Enterprises, ASE’s internal financial resources were strengthened through a public share offering in 1981.

Until the mid 80s ASE remained India’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer with over 10% market share, a figure not matched by any other company even today.

    Ambalal Sarabhai Enterprises Limited

However, by the late 80s ASE ran into serious difficulties spurred by restrictive patent and price controls and intellectual property policies put into place by the government of India. This restrictive environment discouraged many of its international partners form continuing to conduct business in India, and the partnerships foundered, throwing ASE into crisis.

The founder of the company, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, passed away in 1971.

During the previous years his brother Mr Gautam Sarabhai had assumed chairmanship of ASE which he held until 1992, when Mr Kshitish Divatia took up the role.

By the early 90’s ASE was desperate for a complete re-organization to stave off its demise. The publicly traded textile mill - Calico Mills - had already collapsed and many in the industry at that time were convinced that ASE was destined for the same fate.

A re-structuring effort over the next decade was lead by Mr. Kartikeya V Sarabhai (son of the Founder, Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai), who took over in 1995 and saved the company from bankruptcy. Crippling liabilities that had accrued over many years were resolved through many stages of corporate restructuring.

Mr. Kartikeya Sarabhai along with his son Mr. Mohal Sarabhai manage what is ASE today, with newly launched companies and restructured subsidiaries, with a vision to once again become a key strategic and significant industrial company backed by a rich legacy. ASE today remains routed to its past but is growing well into the future...

Bringing innovative solutions to complex sets of problems meant reinventing ASE into a different corporation to ensure its survival in the contemporary business environment in India.

ATLANTA (AP) — Curtis Haywood II scored a career-high 18 points to help Georgia Tech overcome a slow start, but his memory may have been more important than any of his baskets as the Jackets eased past East Carolina, 79-54 on Friday night.

Tech (3-1) missed eight of its first 10 shots and fell behind the Pirates (2-2), 11-6, and Haywood thought back almost a year to when he and former teammate Ben Lammers both went for a defensive rebound late in a game and tipped it in. For the other team.

Grambling State upset the Jackets in that game, 64-63.

      He brought it up. Pointedly.

“We started out slow and I was a little roused up,” Haywood said. “I was a little angry at my team for the way we were playing, so I was going a little crazy during the timeout saying all kinds of words.”

Haywood, who hit 5-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-5 from deep, brought up the painful memory. After the rant, the Jackets locked in. And once they locked in, East Carolina was locked out.

Jayden Gardner scored 13 points and Seth LeDay added nine points and nine rebounds off the bench, but East Carolina could not overcome 22 turnovers and a big difference in 3-point shooting.

Tech made 9-of-17 from beyond the arc to East Carolina’s 2-of-17, and the Jackets raced to a 40-22 halftime lead.

“I thought Tech got on a good offensive run,” East Caroalina coach Joe Dooley said. “It was an avalanche. It was very disappointing the way we handled adversity. Tonight, we got hit and we didn’t compete.”

Jose Alvarado added nine points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Michael Devoe, coming back from a toe fracture, also scored 13 points and had four steals.

The Jackets pulled away when Haywood hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Shembari Phillips followed with a trey and a jumper for a 34-18 lead.

“Curt did a great job after the first media timeout,” Tech coach Josh Pastner said. “You can speak until you’re blue in the face (as a coach) about how every possession matters, but the best way for people to understand that is through experience.”

      BIG PICTURE

East Carolina: The Pirates held each of their first three opponents (Delaware State, James Madison and Lamar) under 30 percent shooting from deep. The Jackets made 52.9 percent.

Georgia Tech: The Jackets played improved defense. For the first time, no one fouled out.

      INJURY UPDATE

Georgia Tech starter Evan Cole missed the game with a sprained left ankle.

Georgia Tech Basketball: Jackets find offense in huge win over East Carolina

The East Carolina Pirates hung around for a little bit with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets but ultimately the Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second half.

After having their worst offensive performance statistically since 2015 on Tuesday night, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets bounced back on Friday night against East Carolina with a huge win where the offensive performance was the key to the 79-54 victory.

The Yellow Jackets overall shot just under 50 percent for the game and shot 52.7 percent from beyond the arch against the Pirates. Sophomore shooting guard Corey Haywood II and freshman point guard Michael Devoe lead the Yellow Jackets offensive with 18 and 13 points respectively.

Haywood’s 18 points didn’t only lead the Yellow Jackets but it led all scorers as he made 5-of-9 shot attempts including 3-of-5 from three. Devoe on the hand was nearly perfect, making all four of his field goal attempts while hitting three of his four free throw attempts.

The victory over East Carolina also saw quality offensive performances out of a few other key Yellow Jackets including sophomore point guard Jose Alvarado (4-of-7 FG, 9 pts) and redshirt senior shooting guard Brandon Alston (3-of-6 FG, 9 pts). James Banks III followed his quality performance against Tennessee with a similar performance scoring 5 points and bringing down 6 rebounds.

Defensively, it was another strong performance from the Yellow Jackets, as the Jackets forced ECU to shoot at a 35.6 percent clip including just 11.8 percent (2-for-17) from three-point range. The Jackets also forced 22 ECU turnovers on the night. The only notable defensive number that truly needs to improve going forward is the 13 offensive rebound the Jackets allowed to the Pirates.

The 25-point victory for the Yellow Jackets improves their record to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 at McCamish Pavillion. The Jackets will now be off until next Wednesday, November 21, when they take on UT Rio Grande Valley.
