DIY Magnet Party Favor With Jar Lids

When hosting a kid’s birthday party at your home, it can be hard to come up with fun activities to keep everyone occupied. If you find yourself in this scenario, we have two quick and easy magnet crafts for you. The best part? They can double as a party favor that fellow parents won’t want to throw away!

The idea is to reuse those pickle and pasta sauce jar lids you’ve been saving for “the right occasion” and add a disc neodymium magnet to the back of each one. Then, you’ll glue some paper to the inside of the lid with the kid’s creations on it to create a DIY party favor.

First, you’ll want to assemble the magnetic jar lids yourself, as children should not handle the magnets and glue.

What you’ll need:

  1. Outline the jar lids on paper and measure the inside to know what size you’ll have to cut the paper.
  2. Thoroughly wash and dry your jar lids.
  3. Turn the lid over and glue a disc magnet to the top of the lid. The magnet works best here so that the flat side of the lid sticks to a magnetic surface!
  4. Let the glue dry overnight.

Now that you have the lids prepared, you can have the kids decorate the paper circles. Our recommendation? Take the kids through the magnetic paint activity we’ve talked about here. Make sure to use a few shoeboxes to keep things as mess-free as possible! Once they’re done, let the paintings dry, glue them inside the lids, and write each kid’s name on the back so they can take them home!
Parents will appreciate this cute craft over loud or messy party favors! For other quick and crafty DIY projects, visit our Magnets for Crafts blog page.

DIY Wedding Favor Magnets

wedding favor magnet, Mama Knows It All

I am not a crafty lady. That being said, I love crafts, and I was determined to MAKE SOMETHING for my DIY wedding. I considered making my gown, then realized that was too risky. Thought about making my own bouquet, but I don’t really have an eye for color. With a budget of $100 for 100 guests, wedding favors seemed like a good place to stretch my creative muscles. I knew that I wanted my favors to be functional (as a Blogger, I get enough non-functional “swag”), and they had to look nice. Like, no jagged edges, no amauterish handwriting. They had to be something that people would actually like. So, I decided to make magnets! Yes, y’all, I went Craft 101 on my wedding guests! But you know what, when I made the first sample set, I cried. Yup, those little ole magnets brought out the bride in me!

These wedding favor magnets are so simple to make, that I had to share. A couple of tips before you get started, though. First, start them ahead of time. I had the materials in July, but my BFF Samone was STILL putting them together the week of the wedding. Also, ask for help. My friend Baniah came by to help one day, also, and in hindsight, I should have had 2 or 3 more folks helping…it would have gotten done a lot faster. Finally, purchase these tiles from Amazon. They were a better quality and more inexpensive than any that I found in local craft stores. Maybe they’ll bring out the bride in you, too?

What To Do:

1. Create your magnet design. Since Terrence and dated long distance for 2 years, we decided to use the Oakland and Philadelphia airport codes on our magnet. I also used my totally epic PicMonkey skills to create a replica of an Oakland post office stamp with our wedding date on it.

2. Cut your design out to fit the tile. After I made the graphic, I put 20 on a page, and Terrence printed them off and cut them to size.

3. Coat the flat side of the tile with ModPodge. Don’t worry if it looks cloudy. When it dries, it’ll be clear.

4. Place the paper with your design on it directly on top of the ModPodge (with the design side down). Cover the back of the paper with more ModgePodge.

5. Let the tile dry and then add a magnet. You can use a hot glue gun to glue the magnet on, or use magnets with sticky backs like we did.

6. That’s it.

7. No. Seriously. It’s that easy.

Now that I’ve made these, I feel empowered to make ALL the magnets! Halloween magnets, Thanksgiving magnets, Kwanzaa magnets…oh, it’s on! Really, though, it felt great to give something to our family and friends that commemorates such sweet (and challenging) memories for the both of us.
