Dragon Ball Z: Why Android 16 Wasn't Revived After the Cell Games

Android 16's battle-ready nature belied a gentle, protective instinct, but neither this nor his brief friendship with Gohan saw him revived in DBZ.

Dragon Ball Z's Android Saga and succeeding Cell Saga were turning points for the series in multiple ways. Featuring new Super Saiyan forms and deadly robotic assassins, these arcs were at one time meant to pave the way for Gohan to take center stage in the franchise. The Android Saga would also end with a heel turn for the titular technological foes, but one of them didn't make it out alive.

Android 16's battle-ready nature belied a gentle and protective instinct, but neither this nor his brief friendship with Krillin and Gohan saw him revived after Cell's defeat. Here's why the gentle giant wasn't wished back like many others killed in the Android and Cell Sagas -- and how he could eventually return in Dragon Ball Super.

Why Android 16 Is Still Dead In Dragon Ball

Android 16 was killed during the battle with Cell, with the latter being far eviler than Dr. Gero's other creations. Before the battle, 16 had become something of an ally to the Z-Fighters, especially Gohan. This was due to his love of nature and life, something he, as a purely robotic Android, was the exact opposite of. Before being destroyed for good by Cell, 16 urged Gohan to fight on, defend the planet and all the innocent life on it. The gentle android's death sent Gohan into a fit of rage and anger which he used to transform into Super Saiyan 2 and defeat Cell.

Following Cell's destruction, the Dragon Balls were used to revive those killed during the massacre of the preceding sagas. It's never explicitly stated if Android 16 is part of this number, though there's good reason to believe he's not. Androids 17 and 18 were originally humans who, like Dr. Gero himself, were merely cyborgs fitted with cybernetic parts. For instance, 18 later married Krillin and had their daughter Marron without an anatomical issue. Android 16, on the other hand, was completely robotic, and in the Dragon Ball manga, Shenron cannot revive or reconstruct purely artificial beings. This is why Android 16 is never seen or heard from again.

Ironically, the anime does show Shenron as being able to do these things when the Earth's citizens are restored after the Kid Buu Saga. This included the fully robotic Android 8, an old friend of Goku's who looked like Frankenstein's monster, as well as the robotic girl Arale from Dr. Slump. The movie The Path to Power, which retold the Red Ribbon Army Saga from the original Dragon Ball but with the updated animation of Dragon Ball GT, also showed Android 8 revived by the Dragon Balls. These discrepancies are only in the anime, however.

How Android 16 Could Still Return In Dragon Ball

Changes to the Dragon Balls' power, even in the manga, are not uncommon. Dende was brought in to replace Kami as the Guardian of Earth after the Androids began to wreak havoc, so he could have upgraded the Dragon Balls after 16's death to work on robotic beings. He may have even done so, reviving Android 16 off-screen and explaining the presence of a revived Android 8 and Arale in the anime.

This means Android 16 has just as much chance as anyone to show up again in Dragon Ball Super, living the life he had always dreamed of and maybe even fighting once again to defend the Earth against all who would threaten innocents.

Dragon Ball Z: Why Android 16 Wasn't In Trunks' Future

Despite being an ally to Android 17 and 18 in Dragon Ball Z, Android 16 was mysteriously absent from the events that played out in Trunks' future.

Despite being a main character in Dragon Ball Z’s Android Saga, Android 16 had no role in the events that played out in Trunks’ future. In the anime, an adult Trunks visited the Z-Warriors in the present to warn them that they would all die at the hands of the evil creations of Doctor Gero, Android 17 and Android 18. When it came time for them to show up in the present day, they were joined by Android 16, a character Trunks had no knowledge of.

Modeled after the son of Doctor Gero, Android 16 was a robotic fighter created to fulfill a single purpose: killing Goku. He accompanied 17 and 18 on their travels, and was present for their battles with the Z-Warriors and the infamous Dragon Ball Z villain Cell. 16, who was stronger than both of them, tried to stop Cell from absorbing them but failed in the end. After returning during the Cell Games as a spectator, 16 was killed by Cell. Though he died, Android 16’s final moments and message to Gohan about doing what needed to be done helped inspire him to finish off Perfect Cell.

It’s interesting to note that as important as Android 16 was in this story, he wasn’t around in the future that Trunks told them about. The reason for his absence can be explained by what was said about the impact of Trunks’ actions. When he made the decision to visit the past and undo Goku’s death by giving him the medicine for his heart virus, there was an unfortunate and unavoidable butterfly effect. There were many inexplicable changes and additions, including the fights with new androids like 19 and 20, and 18 deciding to activate 16. Driven by her curiosity, 18 woke him up (despite being urged not to by Doctor Gero).

As for how Trunks’ time-traveling caused 18 to activate 16, it could be that 18 made a decision that differed from what happened in Trunks’ future because of how he unknowingly altered this moment. Originally, the Z-Warriors weren’t supposed to be present in Doctor Gero’s lab. But thanks to Trunks’ warnings, they were able to show up when 17 and 18 were being unleashed. It’s possible that the scene where 17 and 18 discussed activating 16 would never have happened if the Z-Warriors weren’t there. Plus, there’s the matter of their rebellious behavior. In the present-day, 17 and 18 showed more independence than their future counterparts, who followed their programming more diligently. This could have been another contributing factor that led to 16’s emergence.

What all this means is that Android 16 likely did exist in Future Trunks’ timeline. Either due to the difference in the androids’ decision-making processes, the interference of the Z-Warriors, or a combination of both, 16 was never tampered with and remained dormant throughout the battle with the androids. It’s worth wondering what would have transpired if 16 was around in Trunks’ future. With Goku dead, he wouldn’t have had a clear purpose, so it’s hard to say what he would have done. Since his peaceful nature in Dragon Ball Z suggests that he wouldn’t have joined 17 and 18 in killing the Z-Warriors, he may have embarked on his own journey.

"Hello, I am Android 16. I am hilarious and you will- BIRDS BIRDS BIRDS GOKU."
— See You Next Tenkaichi

Android 16 (人造人間16号, Jinzōningen Jū Roku-Gō, Artificial Human Sixteen) was Dr. Gero's sixteenth android creation, initially designed to serve his vendetta against Goku, who overthrew the entire Red Ribbon Army as a child. He is described as a ginger-haired android who is actually modeled after Gero's deceased son.

Android 18 noticed Android 16 in his pod, opening him despite the resistance of Dr. Gero after his murder. Following Future Trunks destroying the lab, Android 16 survived and had his pod opened by Android 18, who was standing alongside her brother Android 17. Android 16 stated his name to the androids and then revealed his designation upon Android 18 asking, being informed of Dr. Gero's passing by Android 17, who he initially thought was referring to having killed Goku. With this out of the way, Android 16 asked if the group could proceed to murder him and they agreed to assist. The androids departed, though stopped in their travels when Android 17 announced that he wanted a car. While the group waited for a vehicle, Android 16 was asked of his interest in whether or not he wanted it to be a truck. In turn, Android 16 asked if it would assist in murdering Goku and then said he hoped for it to be a truck after Android 17 guessed that he could use it to hit Goku hard. Vegeta then arrived, asking which of the androids would like to fight him and Android 17 asking Android 16 if he would be interested. Android 16 denied since Vegeta was not Goku and he acquired a hobby after Android 17 said they needed to get him one. Android 17 took note of Vegeta's transformation into a Super Saiyan, asking Android 16 about it who instead noted that the birds had flown away and that he liked them. Krillin, Piccolo, Tenshinhan and Future Trunks arriving afterward. Android 17 noted their appearance and asked Android 16 if he wanted to get involved by fighting them, Android 16 dismissing the group. With Android 17 stepping up to assert that the group could not interfere with the fight or he would become involved and Piccolo citing Goku as someone that he would actually be interested in helping, Android 16 asked if he said "Goku" and reiterated that he had heard Piccolo say this when Android 17 answered him, returning to focusing on the birds per Android 17's request.[1]

Search for Goku[]

Following the showdown with the Z-Fighters, the androids flew around looking for a car, finding a Lucky Foods van, which Android 16 tried to lift before Android 17 explained that he was planning on riding it. He apologized and after Android 17 noted he had made room for himself in the van with making its contents come out, he acknowledged this and called "shot gun" in sitting in the back. Android 18 wanted to look for clothes as opposed to search for Goku, leading Android 17 to remark "Women" and call on Android 16 to weigh into their conversation, him confirming that she was female. The group were later pulled over by officers, whom confronted them. Android 16 stepped out of the vehicle along with Androids 17 and 18 at the request of the officers, Android 16 telling the officer who tried to arrest him that he could not sit in the back since he himself had called "shot gun", leading the officer to believe that he was in possession of a firearm and try handcuffing him, only for the handcuffs to not be effective on the android who destroyed them with ease.[2]

Android 17 drove the group through an alternate route, Android 18 complaining while Android 16 began to state his enjoyment of the alternate route for its scenery and being able to spend time with the two, though he concluded after Android 18 blew it up that she did not agree with him. With Android 17 calling her out on this, Android 18 offered Android 16 a trip to the zoo after going to Goku's home and after being asked if he wanted to go, Android 16 confirmed that he wanted to see the parrots. The Androids arrived at Goku's home, Android 18 going inside while both Androids 16 and 17 stood outside. With Android 18 confirming that no one was inside and making the guess that Goku was at Kame House while Android 17 dismissed it as the second place they would look, Android 16 confirmed that it would be the next location they searched for him and dismissed Android 17's choice to use a boat when going over to the island, reasoning that they had done it his way and that he now wanted to do it "the bird way" and fly. The group flew over to Kame House and Android 16 stated that Goku was not there and stating it again in frustration, Android 17 then refusing to leave unless being told where Goku was and being challenged by Piccolo. The group left afterward.[3]

After the androids and Piccolo landed, Android 17 told Android 18 to stay out, her deciding to sit with Android 16 who spotted a pelican and tried to call it majestic before being interrupted several times and settling on calling it a big bird. As Piccolo started charging his energy to begin the battle, Android 16 told Android 17 that only minutes had passed when Android 17 claimed that Piccolo had been charging up for hours. Android 16 warned him to dodge and after Android 17 was hit, Android 16 tried to explain that Piccolo had fused with Kami. Android 16 watched the fight between Piccolo and Android 17, Android 18 commenting to him that the fight was boring, leading him to agree with her and say that it would entertaining to have a "rousing round" of killing Goku.[4]

Meeting Cell[]

Cell arrived, instantly recognizing Androids 17 and 18, though was confused by Android 16 who explained his designation before Cell began powering up and Piccolo tried to explain to the group who Cell was as well as that he was an android from an alternate timeline. With Android 17 not believing Piccolo and joking that he was a park ranger, Android 16 added that it sounded nice. While Android 17 and Piccolo fought against Cell, Android 16 turned to Android 18, warning her that she needed to leave since Cell defeating the pair would mean that she would not be safe. Android 18 reasoned that she was too interested in seeing how the fight played out, prompting Android 16 to argue that he believed this was a poor decision.

Piccolo fired a Light Grenade at Cell, seemingly killing him. Android 16 stated that he never stood a chance, which Android 18 mistakes for him meaning that he is talking about Cell, when in actuality Android 16 was referring to Piccolo who was then defeated and discarded of by Cell. With Piccolo defeated, Cell remarked that he had died as he lived, elaborating that he was drowning and Android 16 commented that this was sad. Android 16 warned Android 17 that the three had to flee, though he refused to back out since he wanted to see how things played out, another decision that Android 16 found poor.

Android 17 came on the verge of being absorbed by Cell who bragged that he would take his time killing everyone on the planet including Goku after he absorbed him and Android 18 and achieved his perfect form. In hearing this, Android 16 put his hand on Cell's shoulder and as he turned, Android 16 punched him in the face while asking him to repeat what he had just said. Android 17 was surprised by this, but also curious of what had taken Android 16 so long to get involved, Android 16 answering that he wanted to see how things played out, prompting Android 17 to ask if he had just used sarcasm only for Android 16 to reveal that he was not programed for sarcasm.

Android 16 mentioned his intent to kill Cell, reasoning that he could go against his sole purpose of killing Goku since Cell had some of Goku inside of him thanks to his cells and found the perimeters acceptable as he charged at Cell, who was able to stab him with his tail through the neck and tried to absorb him unsuccessfully. When this did not work, Cell questioned if he was fully robotic, which Android 16 confirmed, reminding him that his name was "Android 16" and meaningful in that he was a robot as opposed to being a cyborg like that of Androids 17 and 18. Android 16 grabbed the tail and threw Cell to the ground, ripping it off.

Cell emerged from the ground, questioning Android 16 on whether or not he knew how long it would take for him to regrow the tail, Android 16 questioning what he meant as his tail grew back and Cell explained his regeneration abilities came from Piccolo. Android 16 stated that his mistake was starting at the wrong end, elaborating that he intended to remove Cell's head next, the two fighting again and Android 16 impressing Android 17 with his Rocket Punch. This knocked Cell down, allowing Android 16 to take his body and throw it to the ground then send him underground.

Android 16 fired a blast through his arms, calling for Cell to follow the light it set and after this questioned the other androids on why they were still there, elaborating that he was not sure if he could stop Cell and that the latter would wreck havoc if he absorbed the two. Though Android 17 mentioned that they were planning on doing that as well, Android 16 defended his choice to save them by telling Android 17 that he liked him. Android 16 then revealed that he had become attached to the planet and did not wish for any further harm to occur to it, prompting Androids 17 and 18 to repent, Android 17 even going as far as to not want to kill Goku anymore to which Android 16 warned him not to get crazy. Cell then popped up and absorbed Android 17, achieving his Semi-Perfect form.[5]

Following Cell transforming, Android 16 went over to Android 18, instructing her to come with him if she wanted to live and ran with her until being stopped by Cell, who started to make noises with his new lips, until Android 16 punched him in the face and was then shot by Cell in retaliation, prompting Android 18 to ask if he was okay. Android 16 explained that he had suffered damage but questioned how she was, being helped by her afterward when Tien stalled Cell. Android 16 questioned where Android 17 was and with Android 18 telling him that he was gone, Android 16 mentioned that it was sad and that he was sad as well. The two left the island thereafter.[6]

The two fled to an island, among others. Android 16 corrected Android 18 that they were in archipelago, her thanking him and asking if he was waterproof, Android 16's injury causing him to be no longer as he explained to her. Android 16 told Android 18 that Cell would not risk damaging her, his rationale for Cell not blowing up any more islands after he did so for one of them and proceeded to so for others, Android 18 confronting him over his prediction being proven wrong and Android 16 noticing a squirrel in front of him and calling it a bird. Vegeta arrived, stopping Cell as he planned to destroy the island and being noticed by Androids 16 and 18, Android 16 calling him a pointy haired bird.[7] While watching the fight between Cell and Vegeta, Android 18 found herself perplexed by the latter's advantage over Cell, Android 16 repeating the phrase "Data not found" in the background while she spoke, leading Android 18 to question if he had anything "substantial" to add, Android 16 responding by asking her the same question.[8]

Androids 16 and 18 were capable of overhearing Vegeta while he bargained with Cell, who was convincing him to allow him to absorb Android 18 to achieve his final form. Android 18 questioned Android 16 on whether Vegeta would actually allow him to do it and Android 16 asked her if she would. Following her denial that she would, Android 16 questioned what the two were talking about. Krillin revealed himself to the pair with a scream, asking Android 18 to not kill anyone, though Android 16 insisted that no deal would take place.

He explained to Android 18 that Goku was part of the anyone Krillin was referring to, which had led to his decision, though he reversed the choice after Android 18 swore she would get him "a Goku". Cell spotted the androids and Krillin after being permitted by Vegeta to absorb her and Future Trunks warned for the group to leave, Android 18 planning to take off with Krillin and Android 16 before the latter told her that he had just become comfortable and furthered that Cell would leave him be since he had no interest in him. After Android 18 ran off, promising that she would come back for him, Krillin and Android 16 exchanged praises of the other's bravery, Android 16 insisting after he left that he was way out of his league.

Android 18 and Krillin were stopped from fleeing by a confrontation from Cell, though Android 16 became involved by instructing him to leave Android 18 alone. After Cell made a remark about Android 18's attire in an insistence that she wished to be absorbed, Android 16 followed Krillin's lead by attacking Cell, though he was also ineffective. Krillin, recovering from the attack, prepared to charge Cell when seeing him approaching Android 18 with his widened tail, though Android 16 prevented him from doing so, insisting that it was not his time while calling him a "little duckling".

Android 18 was stopped from being absorbed by Cell due to Future Trunks's involvement, who attacked Cell while she fled, allowing her to come back for Android 16 who questioned why she was still there. Krillin joined in lifting him and the three attempted to make an escape before Cell used his Solar Flare to blind the group along with Future Trunks and Vegeta. While Cell was approaching the pair, Android 16 promised Android 18 after she asked him to look after Krillin that he would, followed by her being absorbed and Cell achieving his Perfect Form.[9]

On his own[]

With Android 18 absorbed and the transformation complete, Cell tested out his new form by practicing, eyeing Android 16 and greeting him. The latter reciprocated but when asked by Cell if the pair were cool, Android 16 reminded him that he had absorbed the others who he called his "family". Vegeta came down to confront Cell and in the latter beginning to talk with Vegeta by expressing his admiration for him keeping his word in allowing him to carry out the absorption, he became confused as to whether the top of his head was a crown and asked Android 16 if it was, the latter merely stating that he hated him. After Vegeta and Cell began fighting, in a battle where Vegeta was severely outclassed, Android 16 was witness to Vegeta's unsuccessful attempt at destroying Cell.[10]

After Vegeta was defeated by Cell and Future Trunks transformed into a Third Grade Super Saiyan, Android 16 told Future Trunks that though Senzu Beans healed physical damage, only therapy would heal emotional trauma. While Cell fought Future Trunks afterward, Android 16 cheered him on, calling him an "unreasonably buff bird." Cell was able to convince Future Trunks that he was actually competitive when in reality Cell was much faster as the Super Saiyan form Future Trunks was using was not fast enough to compete with him. After Cell informed Future Trunks of this, Android 16 insisted that Cell was playing him, though changed his view to Cell having played him when the latter began easily dodging the attacks thrown his way by the young Saiyan. Cell mocked Future Trunks with an impression of him while powering himself up, Future Trunks calling it a terrible impression but Android 16 insisting that despite this it was not inaccurate. With Cell's having gained the upper hand revealed, the latter stated his intent to kill Goku, Android 16 telling him that the wording still did not convince him the pair were allies. Future Trunks resigned his fate and prepared to be killed, only to give Cell the inspiration to cast a revolution that he said would be on the news. After Cell flew away, Android 16 questioned what channel.[11]

After Future Trunks' defeat and Krillin and Vegeta returned to the battlefield, Android 16 indicated his interest in making new friends, given that he had lost his others when they were absorbed. Though Future Trunks asserted that he would not become friends with him, Android 16 promptly clarified that he was referring to Krillin who he called the "duck" and the two began a communication that had homosexual connotations in the eyes of both Future Trunks and Vegeta who served as onlookers to the pair speaking. Krillin flew 16 to Capsule Corporation for repairs by Bulma, though Dr. Briefs instead tended to him in his daughter's absence. When Dr. Briefs was able to access Android 16's system via a computer, he found "Surfin' Bird" playing on repeat in his system and asked how long it had been playing, confusing the accustomed 16. While learning that he was missing an extensive amount of data from Dr. Briefs, 16 said it was fine given that he was his own android and that he would live his life accordingly, also declining to have a gun installed though he was appreciative of the offer. 16 noticed Dr. Briefs' pussycat and asked what it was, further questioning if he had permission to touch it and held it on his shoulder as the cat began licking him, motivating him to ask if he could "lick the pussy". 16 later saw Cell's televised announcement of the Cell Games tournament.[12]

The Cell Games[]

Android 16 arrived at the Cell Games and repeated Goku's name, noting his arrival. Android 16 greeted Krillin and confirmed that he had been full repaired though was mysteriously lighter, Goku introducing himself to Android 16 at that point and the latter breaking out into song within his mind as he gave him a stare.[13]

After Cell destroyed the Cell Games ring, Android 16 rescued the crew of Mr. Satan, Jimmy Firecracker, and Larry from the explosion. When asked by Jimmy about what his goal was, he simply answered that he wanted to kill Son Goku. During Cell's fight with Gohan, 16 grappled Cell from behind, and declared that he was going to take him out with his self destruction sequence, equivalent to a nuclear explosion. Despite Krillin begging him not to do it, 16 said he has to because if not, Cell will continue to kill everybody. He initiates a countdown sequence towards his self-destruction, but he panics as his plan fails. Trunks then explains to him that Bulma removed his explosive device from his body during repairs. Although Bulma only did that to prevent him from using the device against the team - which she regretted when she saw the situation on live TV - he responds angrily by saying she had no right to do that. Cell proceeds to break free from 16's hold and grants his wish for an explosion by obliterating his body in front of everyone (horrifying Krillin and Gohan the most).

Later, while Goku and the others are struggling against the Cell Jrs., 16 manages to convince Mr. Satan to , throw him to Gohan in order to end Cell's reign of terror once and for all. Once there, 16 proceeds to give Gohan a pep talk:

"Gohan - grow up. You act like you are the only one suffering, but I believe that Trunks has some stories for you; and I can assume that they all end in: "and he died, too." And before you start whining about your father - AGAIN, and I get it - take a moment to consider that my father made me a soulless killing machine TO KILL your father. And that doesn't even come close to the tragedy of fatherhood that is Vegeta. Cell was right - you think you're better than everyone else, but there you stand: the good man doing nothing. And while evil triumphs and your rigid pacifism crumbles into bloodstained dust, the only victory afforded to you is that you stuck true to your guns. You were a coward to your last whimper. Of fear and love, I fear not that I will die, but that all I have come to love - the birds, and the things that are not birds - will perish with me. So please, Gohan... stop holding back. And hey - if we do make it out of this, please pick up my head and beat your father to death with-"
— 16's final words to Gohan before Cell cut him off by crushing his head

Cell then proceeds to crush 16's head, killing him. 16's death was not in vain, though, as it finally pushed Gohan into becoming a Super-Duper Saiyan and defeating Cell. Post-credits, he is shown to be sitting underneath a tree in Other World, accompanied by birds.

It is revealed during the Episode Breakdown of Episode 60 that 16 willingly chose to stay in Other World instead of being wished back by Shenlong, as it is implied people are given a choice on whether they want to be revived or not.

Android 16 was initially a cold distant android with no desire other than to kill Goku, his every action and desire having to contribute to the latter's killing or play some role in bringing about his demise. Shortly after his activation, however, Android 16 became interested in birds, the watching of the species becoming a habit of his. Sightseeing in general gave Android 16 a higher purpose apart from his initial mission and he became convinced that the Earth was something that should be preserved rather than destroyed.[5]

After spending several days with them, Android 16 deeply cared for both Androids 17 and 18, who he not only admitted to having liked[5] but also regarded as his family.[10] His concern for their well-being brought Android 16 to disavow his prior intent to only fight Goku and engage Cell in battle, in the hopes of besting him and thereby stopping the pair from being absorbed.[5] Android 16 was saddened by Android 17 being absorbed and also disappointed when the same fate befell Android 18,[9] holding a grudge over Cell for their absorptions despite the latter's attempts at becoming friends with him since they were the only androids left.[11]

Of the three androids that went after Goku, he was most stoic and removed from conversation, remaining firm in what appeared to be his sole purpose of ending Goku's life. However, he showed other sides of himself when expressing excitement, asking questions and speaking of his fondness for birds.[1] This came full circle whenever Android 16 engaged Cell, as it showed that he was willing to remove himself from his comfort zone in order to save someone (Androids 17 and 18) from being taken from him.[5]

Despite his intent to kill Goku, he held no ill will toward the other Z-Fighters as he encouraged Krillin to stay down so he would not be killed by Cell[9] and cheered on Future Trunks during his fight with Cell.[11] The most animosity he would show was general indifference, as was the case with his treating of the Z-Fighters after their defeat at the hands of the androids or Piccolo when he was seemingly killed by Cell, though he did sympathize with Piccolo for dying alone.[5]

Android 16's desire to kill Goku persisted even after he became accepting of Earthlings in general, not being able to go against his original programming. The idea of doing away with this plan would serve as a deal breaker for him, as it did when both Android 17[5] and Krillin suggested it.[9]

After being severely damaged by Cell shortly after the android took his second form, Android 16's mental state deteriorated slightly, the android repeating himself[8] and sometimes calling other humanoids ducks, which was the case with Krillin, Vegeta,[9] and Future Trunks.[11] Android 16 had particular difficulty distinguishing Krillin from a duck, multiple times indicating in his system that he was one, based on their initial encounter when Krillin became scared and made a sound indicative of a duck.[14]

With neither 17 or 18 left to accompany him after their respective absorptions, 16 was regulated to being seemingly friendless, as he refused he advances of Cell,[10] resorting in Android 16 cheering on Cell's opponents in battle partly out of spite and in realization of the serious threat he posed to the world, knowing that the Z-Fighters remained the only chance the Earth had of survival, uniting him with them under a common enemy.[11] This seemingly friendless existence ceased immediately with the beginning of a friendship between Krillin and Android 16 upon the latter's request, as he had seen Krillin's dedication and well-meaning demeanor, a stark contrast to Cell, showing that Android 16 desired allies that were similar to himself in being generally harmless with the exception of when allies were threatened, as both attacked Cell in order to protect 18.[12]

Android physics[]

Android 16 can't be located by energy sensing, and has to be located the old fashion way. Unlike Androids 17 and 18, 16 is made out of pure metal, a fact that allowed him to escape Cell's tail absorption

  • Rocket Punch: Android 16 launches one of his fists at his opponent. First used against Imperfect Cell.
  • Hell's Flash: Android 16 removes his hands to reveal two cannons, and fires at his opponent. First used against Imperfect Cell.
  • Self-destruction Sequence: In times of crisis, Android 16 can initiate his self destruction sequence, and explode. According to himself, the explosions force is similar to a nuclear explosion. Attempted to use it against Perfect Cell, but failed to as Bulma removed his payload.

Jimmy Firecracker: Because you're a talking head!
Android 16: So are you.

  • Upon his initial activation in Blood, Sweat, and Gears, Android 16 made the same generic mechanical whirring noises as Android 19 and Dr. Gero during most of his movements. Beginning in The Trouble With Time Travel however, 16's movement sounds were changed to the more dynamic robotic sound effects often used in anime such as the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Abridged version of Android 16's voice includes a robotic tone resembling the voice effect used in the original Funimation Dub of Dragon Ball Z, which was removed in later remasters and Dragon Ball Z Kai.
  • In Deities, Devils, and Doing the Dirty, it is revealed Android 16's mechanical brain contains many inaccessible files, one of which is a video recording of Dr. Gero's son, the human on which 16 was designed after, making a video recording to send to his father moments before his inadvertant death by young Goku's assault on the Red Ribbon Army HQ. This original footage created specifically for Dragon Ball Z Abridged bases Dr. Gero's son, who to date has never been given an official depiction, directly on 16's design and depicts the origin of his fascination with birds.
    • In the same folder of inaccessible files, there are other files seen. Amongst them, there are "kl_sn-gku" (Kill Son Goku), sabt-ron (reference to Sabtron, a company specializing in transformers and electro equipments), "cmd_red_xxx" (reference to Commander Red of the Red Ribbon Army, potentially a porn file involving him?), and 17_18_dir (referencing Androids #17 and #18). There also are the files "klak-13", "ksnko-0120", and "chls-crbn".
    • Also seen on the "desktop" of Android #16 are the folders "hel_flsh" (referencing his "Hell's Flash" technique) and "bir_bs" (a play on birbs, a term used commonly online for cute birds).
    • Finally, the desktop contains the file "Murder.exe", the same file Android 19 used against Son Goku in his fight against him.
  • During the credits of Part 3 of Cell-Out, a fan art of a deceased but happy Android 16 in heaven surrounded by birds is shown. The drawing was done by Malik Torihane of Dragon Ball New Age. This also confirms that 16 in the Abridged universe has a soul.
  • Android 16 is, so far, the only character not voiced by Takahata101 to utter a variation of the line "I'm hilarious and you will quote everything I'll say."

"Gohan, let it go. It is not a sin to fight for the right cause. There are those who words alone will not reach. Cell is such a being. I know how you feel, Gohan. You are gentle; you do not like to hurt. I know because I, too, have learned these feelings, but it is because you cherish life, that you must protect it. Please, drop your restraints. Protect the life I loved. You have the strength. My scanners sensed it. Just let it go."

Robotic Assassin

Android 16 (人造人間16号,Jinzōningen Jū Roku-Gō) is Dr. Gero's sixteenth Android creation. He was initially designed to serve Gero's vendetta against Goku, who overthrew the Red Ribbon Army as a child but is later deemed unfit for activation.

Android 16 is easily the tallest of all Androids in the entire "Dragon Ball" franchise, towering at over double the heights of Androids 18 and 17.

He has icy blue eyes, a red/orange mohawk, and gold hoop earrings. His clothing consists of a dark undersuit, with a lime green vest, boots, and bracers. A small Red Ribbon Army logo is sewn to the left side of his vest, indicating his creator's affiliation. This presumptively changes when 16 is taken to Dr. Brief to be repaired; the logo is patched by the Capsule Corp. logo after he joins the Z-Fighters. His physical appearance is based on Dr. Gero's son Gebo, a high-ranking Red Ribbon Army soldier codenamed "Gold" who was killed in action by an enemy bullet sometime before the army's destruction at the hands of Goku.

Despite his intimidating size, monotone dialogue, and seemingly dangerous appearance, Android 16 is calm, friendly, and embraces nature and humanity. He does not tolerate evil and described Cell as an existence whose purpose is to destroy life, especially nature and animals (as Cell is the true evil destroying android that posed a destructive intention to the Earth and its inhabitants of the present timeline, not himself, 17 and 18). He is also protective of whomever he considers his friends, and nature, as he tried to ask Android 17 or 18 to run and hide somewhere and not be absorbed by Cell, even fighting the imperfect bio-android, although these proved futile, as 17's cockiness got the better of him, causing his absorption, and his damaged body and Semi-Perfect Cell's power too much for him, leaving him unable to protect 18, also resulting in her own absorption, and these qualities proved him to be a valuable ally to the Dragon Team in their battle against Cell. Despite his peaceful and friendly nature, he retains a cold and distant attitude towards Goku, since he was initially programmed to kill him. He and his fellow android, 17, had a somewhat brother-like relationship, and his nature-loving character inspired Gohan to let go of his rage and unleash his true power and the newly resurrected Android 17 to live a life to protect nature and animals as a park ranger, and causing him to change his demeanor to undergo a calm, mature, gentleman-like persona, who is willing to sacrifice himself to defend the surrounding animals from whosoever tries to harm them.

In Xenoverse 2, Android 16 reveals that while he is programmed to kill Goku, he recognizes that Goku is a noble person and admits that he would prefer to be free of his programming. Ironically, in FighterZ, 16 reveals that when his memory was transferred into a new body by Android 21 his program to kill Goku was not included, which he notes when he confronts a Goku Clone.

Android 16 is an incomplete android designed by Dr. Gero to be created exclusively from synthetic technology. He was modeled on Gero's dead son, a high-ranking Red Ribbon soldier long ago felled by an enemy bullet. In his affection, Gero made him powerful but did not want him to be destroyed in battle, so he made him gentle.[2] Android 16's programming has yet to be completed and, as such, Dr. Gero opts not to activate him in fear that he might destroy Android 17 and Android 18. Dr. Gero even goes as far as to dub Android 16 a "prototype".[3] Android 16's most significant malfunction from Gero's perspective is likely his inherently peaceful behavior, often interacting with nature rather than complying with Gero's orders, making him similar to Android 8, although he is still committed to fulfilling his mission on destroying Goku. In due course, there is some truth to Dr. Gero's prediction, as Android 16's serene outlook drives him to attempt to destroy Cell, in an effort to eliminate the serious threat Cell posed to peace on Earth. Android 16 is very quiet, normally talking only when needed. He is also the only character that addresses that Android 17 and Android 18 are not evil.

Due to these defaults, Android 16 was not meant to be activated before eventually being fixed by Dr. Gero; this is evidenced in Future Trunks' timeline where Android 16 is not seen and was possibly not activated, possibly due to his peaceful nature or because Future Goku was already dead due to the Heart virus and, thus, was no longer needed (Future Trunks fails to recognize Android 16 upon his second visit from the future). In Xenoverse 2, it is shown that Future Android 16 does actually exist in Future Trunks' timeline as he is found and reprogramed by Towa (in parallel timelines created as a result of the 2nd Future Warrior fixing Towa's alterations Future Android 16 is activated and joins forces with Future Android 17 and Future Android 18) to kill Future Gohan in Age 780 and later Future Trunks in Age 785 but was defeated both times thanks to the intervention of the 2nd Future Warrior and eventually destroyed.

"Negative! I will only fight Goku."
— Android 16 when 17 and 18 ask him to fight Vegeta

In the mainstream timeline, Android 18's curiosity in Android 16 leads her to activate the giant and the discrepancies with Gero who severely forbids her from doing so lead Android 17 to kill him. Future Trunks attempts to destroy the androids with a Buster Cannon before the activation of Android 16, but his attack has no effect on the trio and thus Android 16 is activated. Once he is activated, Android 17 asks Android 16 what it feels like to be free for the first time in years, and tells him that Dr. Gero warned them not to activate him, saying he would destroy them all. Android 18 asks what Gero meant, but Android 16 does not respond. Android 17 then asks Android 16 whether he does not want to tell them or whether he is just the strong, silent type, but Android 16 still says nothing. Android 17 then asks if Android 16 was created to kill Goku, and Android 16 simply says yes. Android 17 says that he hates the idea of following Gero's programming, but feels that they need a sense of purpose. The trio then proceeds to travel in search of Goku, whom Android 16 is programmed to kill, ignoring the nearby Z Fighters.

As the androids pass over a mountain road, Android 17 decides to land, and Android 18 and Android 16 follow suit. Android 18 asks why they have landed, and Android 17 says that there is no rush, and they might as well enjoy the trip. Android 18 asks if they are going to walk, but 17 says that when a car passes by, they will take it. 18 says that Android 17 is still part human, as he has the male love of pointless amusement. Android 17 asks Android 16 if he understands, since he was created from a human male too. Android 16 then reveals that he was never a human, making him fundamentally different from Android 17 and Android 18. Android 17 is surprised that Gero had the capability to make a true android, and wonders why he returned to cybernetics afterwards. When Vegeta in his Super Saiyan form intercepts the trio, 17 and 18 implore 16 to step in and fight, interested to see him in action, as that was their main purpose for activating him in the first place. However, Android 16 refuses to fight him, thus prompting Android 18 to volunteer.

When Android 18 overpowers Vegeta in the fight, Future Trunks, Krillin, Piccolo and Tien Shinhan arrive as Vegeta's reinforcement. Android 17 takes the opportunity to ask 16 if he will join the fight, though, as he initially assumed, Android 16 would once again opt out. Vegeta refuses to give up and stubbornly says that he would rather die alone than accept assistance in battle, especially from Goku and his friends. Impressed by his resolve, Android 17 tells the other Z Fighters to respect the code of the warrior and not interfere with Android 18 and Vegeta's battle and promises to deal with anyone who does. However, when 18 breaks Vegeta's arm during the battle, Trunks breaks 17's non-interference truce because he could not bear to see Vegeta injured and attacks 18. Android 17 intervenes and easily defeats Future Trunks, Tien, and Piccolo. At the conclusion of the encounter, which has rendered everyone incapacitated besides Krillin (who is spared so that he may see the others healed by Senzu Beans), it is revealed that 16 has been more intent on observing nearby birds, saddened that they flew away because of the noise made by the battle scene, than to take part in the fight. The pair then meet up with Android 16, who is still nearby, looking off into the distance. Android 17 asks what he is looking at, and Android 16 simply says that the birds flew away because they were too noisy. 17 seems confused by this, and 18 suggests they fly to someplace where more cars will pass by.

The androids decide to go to the nearest town to get 18 some more clothes (as her outfit was damaged by Vegeta) and find a car. As they are about to leave, Krillin rushes over to them, telling them to wait. Android 17 asks what he wants, and Krillin asks if they just want to kill Goku, or take over the world. 17 says that for now they are just going to kill Goku, and will decide what to do next afterwards. Krillin asks why they want to kill Goku, since it was Dr. Gero who hated him, and he is now dead. 17 replies that Dr. Gero has nothing to do with it and that it is just a game, which is why he did not ask Krillin where Goku is. Krillin asks if they would leave Goku alone if he begged them, but Android 16 replies that they would not, they were created to kill Goku. 17 agrees, and tells Krillin to hurry and go give his friends some Senzu Beans. Android 18 then kisses Krillin on the cheek, and the androids fly off.

As they fly over a snowy area in the north, the androids spot a Lucky Foods van parked along the road next to a rest stop, while two Lucky Foods workers are drinking coffee. The trio land to check it out. The workers notice and attempt to stop the Androids, but are frightened when Android 16 lifts the van and dumps out its cargo. The androids then drive off, and Android 17 plans to head to Goku's House. Android 18 reminds him that she wants new clothes first, and 17 agrees to take care of that first. As they drive, Android 18 asks Android 17 if he even knows where Goku's House is, and 17 says that he doesn't and has been driving on pure instinct. Android 16 then chimes in with the house's coordinates, and says they can be there in a few minutes if they fly. 18 agrees with flying there, but 17 says that small things in life are what make it fun.

17 informs 18 that they are about to enter a town and he will stop to get her some clothes. Suddenly, two police officers follow them and order them to stop. The androids exit the vehicle and are promptly arrested for stealing the van. The androids are handcuffed by the officers, but 16 easily breaks them off of his wrist and 18 throws the police car into a nearby mountain. 17 and 18 remove their cuffs and the trio continues on their way, leaving the terrified officers behind. Once they reach the town, Android 18 goes into a store to get more some clothes.

As the trio drives to Goku's home, Android 17 suddenly comes to a stop. He and Android 18 get out, and Android 17 asks if she felt a change in the atmospheric pressure. 18 says that she did, and Android 16 says that it came from the outskirts of West City. He then says that two organics with powerful ki are fighting. Android 17 says that he never told them he was equipped with a Power Radar, but Android 16 replies that he never asked. Android 17 asks who is fighting, but Android 16 says neither are in his databanks, although one of them rivals Android 17 in power. Android 17 says that his Power Radar is malfunctioning, as no one rivals him in power. The androids then decide to continue onwards, unaware that the combatants are Piccolo, who recently fused with Kami, and Cell, the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero created from the genes of the most powerful warriors to walk the Earth.

As they ride, Android 16 tells 17 and 18 that one of the powers he felt earlier was losing energy (This is the result of Cell absorbing energy from Piccolo) and the fight seems to have reached a conclusion. Android 17 gets cocky and again says that 16's sensors need to be re-calibrated because no one can match their power. Later, 18 tells 17 that she doesn't like her new outfit and when they reach another town she wants to stop to find more clothes, which 17 reluctantly agrees to, while 16 curiously observes a nearby river.

Eventually, the Androids arrive at Mount Paozu, where they are forced to drive through the dense, forest area to reach Goku's house. Android 18 makes it clear that she is uncomfortable driving through the forest's bumpy terrain, while Android 17 seems to enjoy the ride. 18 asks Android 16 how close is Goku's house, which he says is directly ahead. 18, tired of driving through the bumpy terrain, opens her window and unleashes an energy blast that obliterates the entire forest in front of them and makes the ground more even. 17 is disappointed by 18's actions and says that he just wanted to have some fun and enjoy the ride. 18 says that fun is for humans and they aren't human anymore, which causes 16 and 17 to sadly stay silent. When the androids finally arrive at Goku's House, they find it completely deserted (Due to the Dragon Team anticipating this and evacuating a sick Goku days prior). In the anime, 18 goes through Chi-Chi's clothes to find a new outfit, while in the manga, her clothes are already changed prior to their arrival at Goku's home. 17 asks 16 if he knows where Goku might be, and 16 replies that he could either be at Capsule Corporation or at Kame House. The trio decide to fly to Kame House, the closer of the two locations.

The next day, at Kame House, Piccolo watches the news of Cell's attacks on TV while Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien sleep. Suddenly, Piccolo senses that something is amiss, and sees the trio of androids standing outside Kame House, much to his horror. Android 16 states that Goku is not here, which disappoints 17. Piccolo wakes up the others, and Android 17 asks where Goku is, saying that he will use force to make them talk if necessary (Unbeknownst to the androids, Goku, who recovered from his illness, took Gohan, Vegeta, and Future Trunks to The Lookout on the previous day to train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in order to gain the power to kill the androids). Piccolo replies that he wants to see Android 17 try, and says they should go to an uninhabited island nearby where they can fight. After telling the others to stay at Kame House, Piccolo and the androids fly over. Once they land, 17 gives Piccolo one last chance to them where Goku is, but the brave Namekian is not intimidated and tells the cocky android that he will not go down so easy this time. As Piccolo powers up, 16 notices that there is something strange about Piccolo and doesn't believe he is the same Namekian anymore.

While Android 17 fights Piccolo on the Tropical Islands, the battle is interrupted by the arrival of Cell. Piccolo explains that Cell is one of Dr. Gero's creations and that he needs to absorb Android 17 and 18 in order to complete his design. Cell carries on Piccolo's explanation and tells 17 that the power unlocked from the absorption will be beyond comparison, and that Dr. Gero's dreams of creating the ultimate super-being will be fulfilled. 17 denies this, stating that he is Gero's ultimate creation and he won't join with him. Cell replies that the absorption will be carried out, with or without 17's permission. Android 17 prepares to fight, however, finally speaking, Android 16 orders 17 to retreat because Cell is far beyond both him and Piccolo. 16 explains that if Cell obtains his perfect form, killing Goku won't satisfy him and he'll destroy the entire universe. Now surprised Android 16 is actually speaking, Android 17 is disappointed that the first thing he speaks about is cowardice. Ignoring Android 16's plea, Android 17 rushes towards Cell with great fury, but Cell effortlessly elbows the confident android into the ground. Piccolo tries to aid in the battle, but he is easily tossed aside. Android 18 and Android 16 watch the battle unfold, with Android 18 commenting that 17 and Piccolo must be holding back against Cell, due to her inability to sense power levels and still believing 17 is the strongest being on the planet. 16 corrects her by saying that Cell is simply too strong for them. 16 orders 18 to run away on her own, as 17 refuses to heed his warning, otherwise Cell will absorb them both and nobody will stand a chance against him then. 18 asks 16 what will he do, but the android stays silent.

Piccolo stands from his beating, and prepares one last attack: Light Grenade. As Piccolo charges up the Energy Sphere in his palms, Cell slowly approaches the Namekian and doesn't even attempt to dodge, while Android 17 runs away from Piccolo to avoid possibly getting caught in the explosion. Piccolo tells Cell to die and fires the enormous attack, decimating a massive chunk of the island as the Androids watch in awe, except 16. 18 praises Piccolo's power, thinking that Cell was destroyed. However, Android 16 immediately states that Cell wasn't even damaged by the attack. Seconds later, Cell slowly rises from the ocean without even a slight visible scar. Piccolo suddenly pleads to 17 to run away but Cell brutally incapacitates the Namekian and tosses him into the ocean as 17 watches in horror.

Intimidated, 18 believes fleeing is the best option. 16 orders 18 to run once again, and informs her that he will destroy Cell, shocking 18. 16 decides he must use his power now, even though his original plan was to only use this power against Goku. Android 16 approaches Cell, much to the astonishment of Tien Shinhan and 18. Android 16 tells 18 that he's glad he got to meet her and 17, and enjoyed their time together, before focusing on Cell again. Eventually, when Android 17 is at Cell's mercy and nearly absorbed, Android 16 interferes by sucker-punching Cell and releasing 17 from his grip. After calculating that he and Cell are almost equal in strength, 16 charges toward Cell with a barrage of punches and kicks, which the latter manages to dodge. When they both land on the ground, Cell and Android 16 collide with each other with the Bio Impact and Machine Impact rush attacks respectively, however, Cell catches Android 16 off guard and sticks his stinger right into his neck. Cell laughs and says that he cannot win, before attempting to absorb his bio-energy, however, 16's inorganic nature prevents him from absorbing any energy. 16 smiles and takes the stinger out of his neck, before tossing Cell into the ground by the tail. 16 steps on Cell's tail and literally tears it off of his body. Android 16 says that this will prevent him from absorbing 17 and 18. It is not until Cell manages to grow his tail back, thanks to the regeneration abilities he got from Piccolo's cells, that Android 16 realizes the desperation of the struggle.

Android 16 realizes that he must destroy Cell completely so he will not achieve his perfect form, and attempts to kick him, only to be knocked back when Cell counters with two punches. 16 then launches his fist at Cell in retaliation and resorts to using arguably his most powerful technique, Hell's Flash. Doing so he immobilizes Cell and removes his forearms, tucking them beneath his armpits and revealing cannons within the upper ends of his arms. These cannons take a brief moment to charge before igniting a giant explosion that literally created holes and marks around the island. Meanwhile, Android 16 looks into the hole to see the damage he has done. He reattaches his hands as Tien Shinhan and the other androids continue to stare in shock. 16 notices that Android 18 is still there, and says that he told her to run. 18 says that will not be necessary now that Cell has been defeated, but 16 says she is wrong. He says that Cell, while injured, will not die so easily. He again implores 17 and 18 to escape, but 17 refuses, saying that he wants payback and can now finish a wounded Cell.

As 17 taunts Cell to come back out, Cell begins to emerge from the ground behind him. Tien notices Cell's plan and yells out to 17, but Cell quickly emerges and begins to absorb the android with his tail and signifying his transformation to Semi-Perfect Cell, granting him extended power and speed. 16 dashes towards Cell, but stops short, noticing that 17 has already been absorbed whole. Cell then begins to glow and starts to transform, and 16 runs toward 18 and tells her that they are leaving, and tells Tien to do the same. Android 16 and Android 18 gaze at Cell in horror, as the new Semi-Perfect Cell turns toward the two androids. Android 16 suddenly grabs Android 18, saying that they must escape.

Android 16 takes flight still clutching Android 18, but Cell flies after the pair of androids and quickly overtakes them. Android 16 freezes in the air, amazed at Cell's speed. Cell taunts Android 18 and Android 16, saying that they cannot escape from him, and that thanks to absorbing Android 17, he surprised even himself with his new speed. He wonders aloud how strong he has become, and a furious Android 16 throws a punch at Cell, who remains completely unfazed. Cell smiles at a shocked Android 16 and then blasts him in the head, disfiguring his head and leaving him in a critical condition.

Cell remarks that he has become stronger as well, as a terrified Android 18 looks on. Cell turns towards 18 and says that she is smart not to try to escape. He then says that it is her turn to be absorbed and that he will soon attain his Perfect Form. However, Android 18 holds her hand to her chest and warns Cell not to come any closer, threatening to destroy herself if he does. After glaring at 18, Cell starts speaking in Android 17's voice. Posing as Android 17, Cell tells Android 18 that it is great to be a part of Cell and that it is the only way to be strong, while urging her to let herself be absorbed. 18's resolve seems to waver, but the damaged Android 16 warns her that it is merely a trick. Cell retorts to Android 16 that a robot cannot understand how he and Android 18 feel, and that he should not interfere and continues to attempt to persuade Android 18. He says that she should join him in order to achieve the ultimate power, but makes the mistake of saying that if she joins him, they will be able to fulfill the "great" Dr. Gero's wishes. 18 then realizes that it was not Android 17 speaking, as she and 17 hated Dr. Gero for experimenting on them and would never praise him. Cell scowls at Android 18, and says that if she will not willingly join him, he will absorb her by force. Cell tells 18 that he is fast enough to subdue her before she can self-destruct and tells her to surrender, but suddenly sees the floating figure of Tien above him, preparing to attack. Tien uses his Neo Tri-Beam to force Cell to stay in place, while 18 escapes with 16.

After resuming his hunt, Cell struggles to find 18 and 16. Cell assumes that since he cannot see or sense them, they must be hiding in one of the islands below. Cell sucks in air to his lungs, and yells extremely loud for 18 to show herself or he will destroy the islands one by one. He continues yelling saying that he is not bluffing, and that though he wants to be complete, he is already the strongest on the planet. The residents of a city on one of the islands panic, wondering what the terrible voice from the sky could be. Meanwhile, Android 16 and Android 18 are hiding on a nearby island, and 18 remarks that Cell would indeed destroy all the islands along with her. 16 assures 18 that she will be fine because Cell is too obsessed with completion. When nothing happens, Cell realizes that 18 will not show herself and then turns his gaze to the city on the island below and destroys it in order to flush 18 out. Cell looks at the destruction with no emotion, deciding that 18 was not on that particular island. He yells again, saying that one island has been destroyed and time is running out until her island is destroyed. 18 watches from a distance and notices the explosion's impact on the previous island, as smoke rises from the water. She exclaims to Android 16 that Cell is destroying the islands. Android 16 tells 18 not to worry, and that Cell is holding back his blasts to avoid killing her, as he would never risk his dream of perfection. 18 points out that even if she does survive the impact of the blasts, 16 would be destroyed in his condition. 16 begins to wonder why Cell is even bothering to achieve his perfect state, as it seems to be invincible already. Impatient, Cell uses his Super Big Bang Crash

Dragon Ball Z Theory: Android 16 Is Still Alive

Android 16 was killed by Cell in Dragon Ball Z, but it's possible that he was secretly revived by the Dragon Balls, despite his robotic nature.

Dragon Ball Z famously killed off Android 16, and never brought him back, but could it be that he's still alive, thanks to the Dragon Balls. Android 16 is the only member of the Cell Saga's android trio who has yet to return. Prior to Cell's defeat, Android 18 was released from his body, and Android 17 - who was resurrected with the Dragon Balls - became a main character in Dragon Ball Super.

Android 16's situation, on the other hand, is a different story. Introduced in the Cell Saga as a robotic warrior created by Dr. Gero for the purpose of killing Goku, Android 16 accompanied 17 and 18 on their mission to fight the Z-Warriors. His peaceful nature made him unique to the other two androids, who quickly caused trouble after being awakened. He was a key character during this story arc, as he was the only one of the three who wasn't absorbed by Cell. Android 16 battled Cell but was defeated. At the Cell Games, 16 interfered with Gohan and Cell's battle, and was subsequently destroyed. All that was left of him was his head.

Android 16 was still able to communicate with the Z-Warriors, but this ended once Cell stepped on his head, killing him instantly. Angered by what Cell had done, Gohan became more powerful than ever. After a grueling battle, Gohan finally killed the villain. Following Cell's demise, the Dragon Balls were used to wish back everyone that Cell had killed, including Future Trunks, Android 17, and more. The most obvious omission from this wish was Android 16, who seemingly remained dead. But it's possible that despite appearances, Android 16 actually was brought back by the Dragon Balls.

The Dragon Balls Could Have Restored Android 16

Why would Android 16 be excluded from the wish that resurrected Cell's victims? Many fans believe the reason is linked to Android 16 being a robot. Androids 7 and 18 are humans who were turned into androids after being cybernetically enhanced by Dr. Gero. Android 16, though, was never human; he was created entirely with mechanical parts. Since Android 16 is more robot than human, numerous fans share the opinion that even though 16 clearly had thoughts and emotions, he wasn't really "alive". If he was never alive in the first place, then he couldn't have been brought back by the Dragon Balls.

The problem with this idea is that the Buu Saga confirmed that purely robotic characters can indeed be restored through the power of the Dragon Balls. A cameo appearance from Dragon Ball's Android 8 - the android who was based on Frankenstein's monster - revealed that he was brought back after the Z-Warriors wished back all the good people killed by the destruction of the Earth. If Android 16 wasn't "human" enough to be counted as alive, then Android 8 should have remained dead as well. So when taking Android 8's fate into consideration, it makes sense that 16 could have been revived all those years ago.

Why Android 16's Resurrection May Have Been A Secret

If Android 16 was resurrected, why didn't Dragon Ball Z reveal his return? He was an important character at the time, so it could seem odd that the anime wouldn't show him. But, Dragon Ball Z could have had a good reason for not addressing him. Android 16's death was a key moment for the show, and especially so for Gohan; he told Gohan that he could see within him the potential to beat Cell. Android 16's plea for Gohan to "let it go", put aside his restraints and fight back against Cell to protect human life, was one of the most memorable speeches from the Cell Saga. His words - uttered seconds before Cell stomped on his head - inspired Gohan, and his death is what pushed him to become a Super Saiyan 2. If this hadn't happened, Gohan may have never achieved the level of power necessary to take down Cell and save the world.

If Dragon Ball Z resurrected Android 16 on-screen, it would have happened only a few episodes after this scene. A potential problem with this is that it may have lessened the emotional impact of his death. What happened to Android 16 was a transformative moment for Gohan, so bringing him back right away could have been deemed a mistake, and perhaps rightly so. Also, 16's story was finished. Dragon Ball Z didn't let Future Trunks stay dead for long, but that was because he was important to the narrative. He still had to go back to the future and put things right in his timeline, whereas with Android 16, there was no real reason why 16 had to be shown again. Though a character who fans have grown to love, Android 16 wasn't a member of the Z-Warriors and not someone who had to be around for the next arc. Also, Android 16 wasn't friends with the Z-Warriors, so if he was brought back, he may have felt no need to make his presence known.

How Android 16 Can Return

After a long absence, Dragon Ball Super brought Android 17 back into the fold and made him a hero for its Tournament of Power story. Could the franchise eventually do the same for Android 16? So many years have passed since his death in the Cell Saga that bringing him back may no longer be the problem that it once was.

That being said, there is at least one possible issue with his return, and that would be his similarities with Android 17, who is more like Android 16 than he was before. Both are characterized by their love for nature. But while they do have a lot in common, they are different enough for both to be used. Android 16 is best-remembered for unique, gentle side, as he was generally opposed to violence. This isn't a quality that 17 shares. 16 brought something interesting to the table on Dragon Ball Z, and he could do so  again, if the next anime did choose to utilize him in one way or another. He could have a role in the next story, which could reunite the original trio with Androids 16, 17, and 18 together for the first time since the Cell Saga.

Alternatively, the Dragon Ball franchise can find another way to address the Android 16 situation. Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super had a habit of giving forgotten characters brief but fun cameos. In case Android 16 isn't physically capable of keeping up with Goku and the Z-Warriors, this could be the best way for him to be used in the future. An Android 16 cameo could confirm once and for all that the benevolent android is out there somewhere, still watching over the plants and animals of the Earth.
