I'm an independent insurance agent and a policy holder with Safeco. I've been disappointed and frustrated with the extra long hold times I've had with Safeco in regards to service and claims. I assisted a client with a claim and was on hold for 2 hours! This is unacceptable.

I got a new car insurance policy because Safeco is way too expensive. In fact the company I went to is affiliated with Safeco (Liberty Mutual). My Safeco policy was paid in full and due to expire at midnight on the expiration date. I got a new policy that picked up at am the day after expiration. Safeco claims they had to have a policy in place because I did not notify them. My notification was my non payment; something I have done in the past. They billed me for their extra day coverage. They claim I needed to come to their office and sign a form that says I wanted to stop coverage. They went all they way to a collection agency for payment. I have since paid them because talking to them was non-productive. I believe that all insurance is a scam and this just re-enforces my view.

Why Safeco is a horrible company will be clear in a moment. Communication is key in any business to maintain a good relationship. For the past 2+ years I’ve been a Safeco customer because of 3 factors when I moved to Arizona:

1) Fair rates based on the higher insurance I wanted to carry
2) Backed by Liberty Mutual as a parent company

3) Was told they are really good communication & customer service

Last November, , I had my bank card ID compromised, so reach out to Safeco and updated my new account number and get the card back on auto-pay like it was. They took care of that and confirmed all information for me. I looked at the bank statement and the Safeco website to confirm this information was updated and the payment was pulled. It was.

At the beginning of March , I received a collections company notice that I owed a balance for December for Safeco and needed to pay. I looked at the Safeco website and found that my account was charged for November and not for December+, and my policy was cancelled in Dec. When I called my broker he looked into it and found that they sent out 3 letters over 3 weeks, that I never saw, stating there was an issue with payment. They Never called me or emailed me, not even once. They Never contact the broker, which they are supposed to do, so they could address it before cancellation. (So he was really upset as well). I was under the impression I, my wife and Son driving were covered, and found we had been without insurance for 3 months. That was the scariest part!!!

Granted, I should have checked my statements to make sure this was still coming out, Totally my bad. However, since I was on auto pay for 2 years without an issue, and called to change to the correct information, they confirmed payment, I did not worry. When I explained to the Safeco agent what happened, they offered me new rates that were $ more per month than I was paying with them due to the Lapse. I asked them to look at my payment history who confirmed, I was consistent, wasn’t late, and always communicated with I had a change in payment type.

They didn’t care and were not willing or able to help. Because of this lapse in insurance my costs went up with other companies as a result. I will NEVER do business again with them or Liberty Mutual because of the lack of trust and communication from Safeco. I hope you don’t go with Safeco or stay with them if you are. Please find another company that will actually help protect you.

I had my homeowner's insurance thru Safeco/Liberty Mutual for 3 years, I never made a claim, paid my bill like clockwork. Sold my home on October 14, , cancelled insurance because of selling home, provided a new address for refund of escrow. They have not released my escrow as of Roughly $ I've spent numerous hours on the phone with safeco directly. They admit on tape they owe me the money, but unfortunately no check arrives. I've been lied to directly from 2 separate customer service reps, which I do have on tape.

The first lie. Was the Penna Treasury now has my money, so I did legwork and Penna State Treasury does not have my money. Back to safeco. The next customer service person tells me we are going to re-send the refund in form of check. Once again lied too. 5th call to safeco. Next customer service person then tells me that no check has been drafted at current time. This is Dec 1 This company is an absolute disaster and now would never recommend or buy anything off of the company again. This has been a total failure of any good business practice. They now hang up when I call. And only correspond thru email. Do yourself a favor, get quotes elsewhere and stay away from this company. Obviously I have to file a lawsuit to get my reimbursement from this company!!! Stay away!!

In March , I loaned my roommate my vehicle to visit his daughter, who was distressed about the pending divorce of her parents. After visiting with her, he got in an altercation with a person and my truck was stolen. I informed SAFECO of the incident so that they would drop my truck from the insurance policy. They stated that since the truck had been stolen, they could not discontinue coverage on it. At the time, I thought that I only had liability and didn't expect to get anything from them. I just wanted to drop the truck so that I wasn't paying monthly premiums on a vehicle that I no longer had. What I did not know at the time is that my sister had increased my coverage without my knowledge.

They made me send them police reports and all kinds of affidavits and statements - several times over - and then accused me of being involved in a "drug deal gone bad." I do not do illegal drugs and was asleep in my bed when I got a frantic call from my roommate around 2 a.m. However, ever since I informed them of my loss and desire to stop paying premiums, they have treated me like an actual drug addict who was attempting to fraudulently make a claim against them personally. Finding no evidence of my involvement in the loss of my truck after several months, they paid me $2,, of which they kept a $ deductible. They didn't refund the premiums that they forced me to pay from March until November.

They continue to insist that I had something to do with the loss of my truck - even after paying me off with a check for $, and have now listed me as uninsurable/high-risk and have cancelled my insurance coverage. I am a % disabled veteran existing on a small disability stipend. I have been without a vehicle since it was first stolen, as $ will not replace my truck or, for that matter, provide me enough cash to purchase any other reliable vehicle. I am in limbo and in SAFECO Hell, whom still blames me and is keeping their investigation open until December 30, These people love taking your premiums, but will fight you tooth and nail not to honor any claims you might have to file. Avoid them and their parent company, Liberty Mutual, like the plague. Yeah. They're that bad.

They are absolutely a terrible business to deal with. They’re owned by Liberty Mutual so I would avoid them too!! I was rear ended and they wanted to handle my claim for me to “help” instead of me dealing with the at fault driver's insurance. I thought that was nice of them but they’re running a game borderlining a scam! Shorting me $ on my total loss To begin with. I’m a manager of a dealership so I provided them with a dozen “comps” (comparisons) and book outs to prove they are off on my value, more than enough proof and they continue to be difficult. I sent them the receipt for my car seat 15 days ago and still no reply back, just avoid them like the plague!! They’re owned by liberty mutual so I would avoid them too!!

I spoke with Bethany at Safeco after my accident. She was unsympathetic and came across like I was bothering her. I’ve never been in an accident and didn’t know the process. She was unhelpful in giving me any info or direction. She kept saying there’s nothing she can do because my policy doesn’t cover that. I’ll ask her another question and then she would just keep saying that. She did not even ask if I was ok. That should be the first question a claims support person should ask. Terrible experience and definitely DO NOT recommend this company.

I’ve been a Safeco customer for auto insurance for 1 year through Gabi.Com, upon renewal of my insurance I attempted several times to get ahold of a representative. It took me approximately THREE WHOLE DAYS!!!! TO GET INTO CONTACT WITH SOMEONE FROM GABI INSURANCE. While awaiting I kepted receiving no response. Meanwhile I ended up with a lapse in my insurance for 5 days trying to renew. I did save a Ton of money on my auto insurance, but the customer service is BEYOND TERRIBLE, A REP From GABI Insurance STATED I WOULD HAVE TO CALL SAFECO DIRECTLY BUT WHEN I TRIED THEY KEPTED SENDING ME TO GABI INSURANCE.

I ended up switching my auto insurance to another company which means I ended up paying more while eventually receiving a letter from the DMV STATING MY REGISTRATION IS SUSPENDED FOR FIVE DAYS DUE TO A LAPSE. When I tell you I’ll rather pay more money for insurance than to deal with this company I mean it!!!! I WISH I CAN GIVE - 0 stars. Luckily I wasn’t in an accident or had to file a claim because I would of been doomed trying to reach someone. Terrrrrible. They should be ashamed of themselves!!! I personally took the time out to make an Account to write a negative review!!

NEGATIVE 10 STARS!!! This is the most CROOKED and SCANDALOUS company I have ever had the displeasure of working with. We are actually current customers (until the second I get a new quote from ANY OTHER INSURANCE COMPANY) and were hit by a driver that has this awful insurance. My wife was discriminated against for being a woman and given the run around for 3 months. She did everything they requested and after each follow up was met with disrespect and shallow responses.

They quoted our car's value at 35k pre accident and are suggesting its diminished value is now 31k. After a couple of appraisals, the best offer we got was 20k. After repeatedly asking them who they got a number 11k more than ours was we were told it was their "Best Educated Guess" based on all the experience they have in this industry. They also followed this statement by saying that almost all diminished value situations fall within 1k and 3k???? Do you think you are talking to a complete idiot? I am absolutely furious and will NEVER be a Safeco / Liberty Mutual customer again and will post in every corner of the internet to safe anyone else from this SCAM of a company. My advice is to run away and pray that you never get hit by someone with this ridiculous excuse for an insurance company representing themYou will be sorry and screwed, trust me!

Seems like a nice company with great provisions. They are part of Liberty Mutual, which advertises you only pay for what you need, except in my case with a car in storage only coverage, they add emergency road service premium. Strange, the car is parked and may not be driven for months. Why do they charge for road service, so much for that slogan?

No adjuster would come out and actually see damage on my brand new house. They just estimated it by pictures then no one is ever there to answer phone. And adjusters are not very professional. I was told this was good place to trust but I don't know now. Very unsatisfied.

I have been with Safeco for a few years. I got sick with Covid and was sick for a month and a half and I ask for an extension from 15th to the 22nd. Being sick still, I trusted everything was going okay and they had taken the from my bank account only for my son to hand me mail where my bank had written to me that Safeco stated I had called and canceled my policy. A extension is not a cancellation. I won't write names out of respect but lady 1 tells me it was my broker who canceled, that was a lie. The broker lost her business four years ago. She transferred me to lady 2. She placed me on hold, comes back and said she had called broker and had given my name and number but she did try and restart my policy while having me on hold. She tells me and provided the broker number. Safeco lied!!! I had to rush and get another policy because Safeco put me in a uncomfortable position by lying to my bank!!

For six months, Safeco has been unable to get my billing correct. They are supposed to be paid from my credit card and escrow with my mortgage company. Neither is happening. They don’t bill, then they cancel the accounts, then they send letters threatening me with collections. Customer service is nonexistent, they just say contact the agent.

I have never seen such disarray with an insurance company as this. These are basic tasks. What in the world is so hard about them that this company can’t get them done? This has been an absolute nightmare. I can only imagine the mess if I ever had to file a claim. I’m leaving them and will advise everyone else to avoid them. I cannot and will not worry whether or not I’m insured. And I shouldn’t have to.

In September I called Safeco's general number and requested a quote. I was sent one via e-mail and decided to go with another carrier (StateFarm). Two months later I began receiving past due notices stating that premiums had not been paid. How the hell was a policy even opened without my consent? I called to complain to Safeco and the response? "We're not sure how that happened." In a day and age where large financial institutions such as Wells Fargo have been caught illegally opening accounts on consumers' behalf without their consent, I found this completely alarming. Do not trust Safeco - they clearly are up to fishy business.

Two large parts of my roof blew off in a recent windstorm in Albuquerque, and I have some interior water damage as well. Initially, my experience with Safeco customer service was good: they responded in a timely manner, sent out someone to tarp my roof (though he only tarped one area), and sent their estimator out quickly. But, Safeco really lowballed the cost to repair the damages. They're claiming that the repairs are less than my deductible. A local reputable roofer gave me a quote that is four times as much as Safeco says the damages are. My roofer is shocked that they aren't covering the cost of the damages. And Safeco said they would be in touch regarding the interior water damage, but they haven't gotten back to me. How is this legal? I can't believe what a scam this is. I'm lucky that I can afford to repair my roof, but what about the people who can't? I'm switching to another insurance company as soon as I can.

I am a RN working during the pandemic. Safeco rep made a billing error years ago and is forcing me to pay all of those premiums in one year. Their “presidential team”? Samantha ** did not hear me and recorded errors in her email about what I said. No acknowledgement of errors despite trying to correct this by email and phone. Terrible service. They can’t even apologize for their errors.

This experience with Safeco has been a nightmare. The buck has been passed so many times that I have lost count. Water damage in 12 different places in the interior of a rental home (luckily the house was unrented at the time) resulted from storms during roof installation and resulted in soggy carpets, soaked dry wall in ceiling and walls, buckling floors, damaged hardwood flooring. The adjuster coming to see the damage approximately two weeks after it occurred recommended a low ball amount of money to repair. It would seem that he didn't understand the nature of water and the damage it causes traveling in a line throughout the entire eastern side of the house, but I find that difficult to believe.

Two months after the damage I was advised by a contractor it was not safe for me to spend time in the house due to toxicity caused by mold and mildew. I am now into the tenth month of negotiation for payment. I have received what I consider to be partial payment, but have had to claw and prod for every cent I have received. Furthermore, I have written to CEO's of both Safeco and Liberty Mutual on June 5 with no response. I would think that these companies would have a person or persons in the corporate office to deal with unhappy customers. Avoid Safeco.

After a heavy snow there was damage to the roof of our well house. I called the claims number on my policy which I have had for over 12 years. I am in Washington and the adjuster was in Texas. He assured me he would help me with my claim. After many pictures and emails, I was told the claim was denied. When I asked for an explanation, he would not return my calls. A company review followed and the adjuster made up a list of voicemails he supposedly made. We are self quarantined and did not miss any calls and no calls were left on my machine. After reading other reviews on this site, I realize my experience is common. Do not buy insurance from Safeco. Put your money in the bank instead.

I have a wind damaged roof from a recent storm. All my neighbors filed claims and got new roofs, some of which have homeowners policies from companies that are notorious for not paying roof claims. Safeco denied my claim, said my roof wasn't installed properly, which isn't true. The "independent" inspector lifted shingles for nearly half an hour till he found one that had one bad nail, took a picture of that and said roof was installed wrong. To make things worse, the claims adjuster was very unprofessional, rude, a complete know-it-all (yet knows nothing) and uncaring. I have a roof inspection report when I bought the house, it was fine then. I'm not sure how this type of behavior isn't criminal, these inspection companies are clearly in bed with SafeCo to see everything their way. The roofing companies I have quotes from strongly disagree with the report, laughing out loud disagree.

I have to put a new roof on out of my pocket now. SafeCo won't ever cover a roof claim with their lying report and a new insurance company won't cover an existing storm damaged roof that isn't repaired. First claim and I've paid more in premiums over the years than the cost to replace the roof. What's disappointing is there doesn't seem to be any great home insurance companies based on these reviews. SafeCo deserves zero stars. I imagine SafeCo like Insuricare from Pixar's The Incredibles. The only way you'll be lucky enough to get good service is if you've got someone on the inside to help you. Otherwise, they are out to make money and don't care about their customers.

Safeco is an insurance company owned by Liberty Mutual. It operates through independent agents located across all 50 states. The company offers a variety of insurance types and coverage options including home, auto, umbrella and identity recovery policies. In addition, Safeco offers its customers several benefits and savings when they purchase more than one policy. 

Unfortunately, Safeco homeowners insurance doesn’t have the best record of customer service. The company has more complaints and lower overall customer ratings than other homeowners insurance companies. However, Safeco may still be a good choice for those who want homeowners insurance and may also require additional coverage, such as identity recovery, pet health insurance, or car insurance.

Safeco has been providing insurance for over years. Despite its long history, the company is not as well known as other insurance providers. Our evaluation concluded that this could have to do with Safeco having a below-average customer satisfaction rating. 

The company also falls below industry standards on average customer complaints and half again as many complaints as other home insurance companies, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Complaint Index. Safeco’s homeowners insurance covers your home, any outbuildings you have, and your personal property. In addition, standard coverage also includes temporary housing costs if your home is unlivable during repairs or rebuilding and liability insurance is also included in case someone is injured on your property. Safeco’s standard coverage is comparable to other insurance companies.

Other coverage options are available as add-ons. Some of them include identity recovery in case of identity theft and special protection for valuables. Should your refrigerator or stove unexpectedly stop working, Safeco homeowners insurance offers equipment breakdown coverage for damage unrelated to regular wear and tear. You might also opt for coverage that matches the price of property replacement rather than its actual cash value. In other words, it would cover the cost of buying a new dining set similar to the one you owned instead of only matching the value of your used set.

Compared to other insurance competitors, Safeco falls short on providing a quality customer experience. According to the J.D Power U.S. Home Insurance Study, the company falls below average when it comes to overall customer satisfaction, with a score of out of 1, According to the NAIC, more complaints are filed against Safeco than is standard in the insurance industry.

Despite complaints, the company does put forth an effort to make insurance simple for its customers by utilizing technology. Safeco offers an easy-to-use mobile app and the Insurance Advisor feature that homeowners can use with Alexa connected devices. In addition, Safeco allows you to file a claim online, by phone, or by calling your local agent. Other customer support services related to your account can also be performed centrally through the website or the company’s toll-free phone number.

You may be able to save on your premium if you have a newer home or install a burglar alarm. Package deals are also a big point of savings. Safeco gives a  discount if you choose one of its packages that combines your homeowners and auto insurance. However, compared to other insurance providers, Safeco does not offer as many discounts.

When comparing Safeco with State Farm’s homeowners insurance, you may have noticed that State Farm has a higher J.D. Power score than Safeco overall. But State Farm has fewer customer complaints than the industry’s average, whereas Safeco has more. As for financial strength, Safeco is only graded with an A, while State Farm has a more robust A++ rating. 

When it comes to discounts, both Safeco and State Farm are relatively limited in their offerings, although Safeco does have a few more. Because of its fewer complaints and stronger financial strength, State Farm edges out Safeco with the rating. 

Safeco vs. Geico

Concerning customer satisfaction, Safeco homeowners insurance has an above-average number of complaints while Geico has a complaint index score for its homeowners insurance product. However, because Geico primarily focuses on auto insurance, the company may not generate enough home insurance business to warrant a complaint index score by the NAIC. . Geico provides home insurance through partners and Safeco uses a network of underwriting partners under the umbrella of its parent company Liberty Mutual.

In terms of financial strength, Geico has a stronger company ranking with an A++ from AM Best, while Safeco only has a grade of A. Safeco has more discounts available for its customers than Geico, which is not surprising given Geico’s focus on auto coverage. Both companies offer homeowners coverage and policies nationwide.

The Bottom Line

Safeco has been in the insurance market for a long time, but it is still not as well known as other insurance carriers. Its low popularity could be because Safeco has a below-average customer satisfaction rating. What Safeco — and every other insurance company — advertises on its website may not indicate your personal experience or offerings that the company has across the United States. Safeco’s coverage, selection of packaged deals, discounts and policies against identity theft might be worth taking a look at when comparing quotes for home insurance.
