Someday soon you may be able to buy groceries from Best Buy (BBY) as it looks to better compete for shoppers online with Amazon and Walmart.

But before then, Best Buy is hoping to sell you an electric bike, an electric mower or some form of beauty product.

The electronics retailer (or one-time electronics only retailer) began selling a range of electric bikes and scooters on its website on Tuesday. USA Today first reported the launch. Offerings range from a $ Segway electric scooter to a $2, electric bike from SUPER

The company — at least in the past five years — has a history of spicing up what merchandise it sells. Several years ago Best Buy opened up shops from Apple, Samsung and Microsoft in its stores. The company also sells 3D printers, health monitoring equipment and connected fitness gear.

"We have expanded our assortment in categories like outdoor living as more and more consumers look to makeover or upgrade their outdoor spaces. This includes products like patio furniture, grills, fire pits, and electric mowers, to name a few," Best Buy CEO Corie Barry revealed on the company's second quarter earnings call last week.

Further assortment tinkering is waiting in the wings, besides the company now selling a full offering of Weber grills (a good move for the newly public company, Weber).

Best Buy gets into the EV game.

Said Barry on the earnings call, "In the back half of the year, we expect to add more products in the fitness, beauty, sleep, pain management, vision, hearing, and electric transportation categories."

To be sure, now is as good a time as any for Best Buy to be testing out fresh categories given the momentum in its business.

Best Buy's second quarter same-store sales surged %, beating analyst forecasts for an % increase. The company also served up a bullish outlook for the balance of , which of course includes the key holiday shopping season.

"Best Buy continues to consistently evolve and test its business model to serve the customer of the future. We believe the current evolution will lead to increased productivity and operating metrics post-pandemic," said Barclays analyst Karen Short.

Short has an Overweight rating on Best Buy (Buy equivalent) with a $ price target. Best Buy's stock is up about 19% to $ year-to-date, slightly lagging the broader S&P 's 20% advance.

The Cheapest SUPER73 Electric Bike - ZG Review UK

Best Buy is cruising into the electric mobility space with the announcement that it intends to sell e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds, both in stores and online. The retailer is collecting some of the best known names in lightweight electric vehicles, including Unagi, Bird, Segway-Ninebot, Super73, and Swft.

Customers interested in buying something right now can visit to browse the company’s selection. And starting in October, 10 Best Buy stores in nine locations — Austin, Texas; Los Angeles; Miami; New York; Orlando, Florida; Puerto Rico; San Francisco; Seattle; and Tampa, Florida — will start carrying e-bikes and scooters in stock.

Image: Best Buy

It’s a huge move by a major big-box store that should help steer more customers to e-bikes and scooters, especially as the pandemic has spurred a boom in sales. Best Buy clearly sees an opportunity to dominate the space, especially in a market saturated with similar-looking products with little to differentiate them aside from brand names and price. Amazon sells a variety of e-bikes and scooters, but it lacks a brick-and-mortar presence where customers can physically interact with the products.

The question is how Best Buy’s emergence as a bike and scooter retailer will affect bottlenecks in the supply chain. Bike shops across the country experienced record sales in the months that followed lockdown, with many selling out completely by the summer. Manufacturer warehouses also had large amounts of empty shelves. Year-over-year sales of bikes for the 12 months ending in April were up 57 percent, reaching $ billion across both large-format and specialty retailers, according to NPD. Today, ordering an e-bike or scooter online typically translates to a 3–4 month wait for delivery, at best.

Many bike and scooter companies, especially those that only deal in electric, sell their products directly to consumers, mostly through their own websites and often with a variety of added extras, like assembly instructions and accessories. Best Buy could allow customers to compare prices and products, especially if their product list grows longer and more diversified.

It remains to be seen whether Best Buy can establish itself as a trusted brand in the micromobility marketplace. Shipping e-bikes and scooters through the mail to customers is a fraught business, as VanMoof’s top executives recently admitted in an interview with The Verge. The Dutch brand has been plagued with delivery issues, with many customers reporting scuffs and damage on their bikes that occurred during shipping.

In addition, Best Buy is offering at-home assembly and fine-tuning for e-bikes through its Geek Squad mobile services for $ Those services include adjusting brakes, seat heights, and handlebars. The arrival of e-bikes and scooters is just in time for Best Buy’s Labor Day sale, during which customers can save up to $ on select e-transportation products, the company says.

“There’s been incredible innovation in the e-transportation space, and we know more customers are looking for ways to efficiently and sustainably commute,” said Frank Bedo, senior vice president at Best Buy, in a statement. “As we grow this selection, we look forward to helping customers find the right products to fit their needs and supporting them as they hit the road safely.”

To be sure, this is sure to put further pressure on local bike shops, which, before the pandemic, have been struggling to compete with low-cost offerings from Amazon. People who own local bike shops are often more knowledgeable about e-bikes and scooters than big-box employees. And they offer maintenance, tuning, and a variety of other services that stores like Best Buy typically do not.

Should You Buy an Electric Bike in a Last-Minute Prime Day Sale?

Many electric bike brands are relatively new to selling directly to consumers or selling through online mega-merchants such as Amazon and REI. As e-bike companies grow, however, they quickly caught on to the benefits of participating in Prime Day electric bike sales. Electric bike brands offering Prime Day electric bike sales were a benefit to you for sure, and the deals also paid off for the brand names in this highly versatile emerging technology.

Cash savings on your new e-bike are a concrete benefit from Prime Day electric bike deals, but the brands and dealers also reap softer but potentially more valuable benefits from exposure during Prime Day. The e-bike brands represented in the deals were not only seeking sales during Prime Day , but they&#;re building recognition for electric bikes overall and for their specific brand or niche.

The e-bike in the Prime Day electric bike deals represented a small selection of this fast-growing transportation alternative. More on this below in the section below on choosing an electric bike, but there are e-bikes built specifically for a widening range of functions, starting with cruising, commuting, and mountain biking with an electrical assist.  The list of electric bike niches and designs is impressive (see below), but what it means for you is the deals will only get better in time as many brands available today settle in and competition between brands grows.

So, if you&#;re ready to buy your first e-bike, we suggest that you settle on a general-purpose electric bike that catches your eye and attracts you more than the other electric bike sales. That way you can get started with your new e-bike this summer and have a blast. If you find your experience with your new e-bike meets your entertainment, fitness, or basic transportation needs, you&#;ll likely be lining up to buy a replacement electric bike or an additional e-bike for special uses. As competition between brands and retailers who sell electric bike grows, the deals are liable to be even better, especially as we get further from the effects of the pandemic.

E-bikes aren&#;t just a spring and summer outdoor entertainment product. You can use electric bikes year-round in many parts of the country, so seasonality won&#;t hurt deals. Just a few weeks ago the most popular and already established brands were struggling to make deliveries to fulfill backorders.

Some of the biggest names didn&#;t have Prime Day electric bike deals this year because they have nothing in stock to sell and any new bikes that arrive in the next few weeks or even months are already sold. It&#;s not unusual now to see electric bike models on brand websites with availability dates in July or October. However, as the supply grows and backorders are fulfilled, The best managed electric bike companies will continue in the business and will amass inventories. So, if you&#;re not in a hurry for your next electric bike, we recommend holding off for this year&#;s Black Friday electric bike deals.

How To Choose an Electric Bike After Prime Day

If you&#;re ready to buy your first electric bike, realize that the experience can be both fun and overwhelming. The fun part is easy to understand &#; there are a lot of cool bikes out there and the ads and videos are appealing and often exciting. The overwhelm comes from the variety of electric bike designs and functions. As mentioned above, the most obvious uses for e-bikes are commuting, cruising around town, on the beach, or in the campground, and mountain or trail riding.

Electric bike designs and purpose go much further beyond the obvious. More unique niches include cargo e-bikes, electric bikes to transport two to six young kids to school, folding bikes for urban commuting and to tuck into a large RV for convenient transport around the campground, e-bikes disguised as regular road bikes for security and for aesthetic preference. There are e-bikes styled like antique motorcycles that can drive much faster than the 20 to 28 mile per hour speed limit for e-bikes in most states today. There are also e-bikes that customers can easily modify to use for an extremely quiet version of flat track racing. Many electric bikes have fat tires, in some cases to aid ride smoothness. A few e-bikes with knobby-style fat tires are sold as adventure bikes, similar to motorcycles equally adept at cross country touring and crossing a desert.

As you shop today&#;s selection of fine Prime Day electric bike after-sale deals, think about how you would most like to use it. Also, consider how often you&#;ll ride your new electric two-wheeler. Within each of the special-purpose electric bike designs, there are also loads of function components such as batteries, electric motors, gear shifters, throttle styles, display control screens, brakes, suspensions, and much, much more. Most electric bike brands also offer a wide selection of racks, bags, seats, security devices, and so on.

As you can see, the choices available run on and on. Our best advice is to choose your first e-bike based on your primary intended use and your budget. You can have fun with your first electric two-wheeler as you learn more about the sport, the utilitarian uses, and all the possibilities available through today&#;s Prime Day electric bike sales.

I got the FASTEST eBike... (SUPER73 RX review)

The Super73 brand is instantly recognizable. With riders like Casey Neistat, Jack Black, and even Justin Bieber, these souped up e-bikes have made a name for themselves as a trendy, future-ish way to get around. And I can confirm, in riding the latest Super73 model, the $3, RX, around NYC for over three weeks, it certainly attracts attention. It looks and rides more like a dirt bike than a bicycle.

Good Stuff

  • Rugged components with a solid frame
  • Great on the road or the trails
  • Long range for a single battery

Bad Stuff

  • High price tag
  • Missing anti-theft features
  • Limited replacement parts

Buy for $3, from Super73

I logged nearly miles on the Super73 in my three weeks with it. In short, I had a really great time cruising around on this bike. The Super73 RX has a watt-hour battery that averaged 38 miles of range in Unlimited mode, the most motor-assisted of the four power modes. There are three other class modes in which RX can operate, including a full-pedal assist mode that Super73 claims can get you up to 75 miles of range. The included 5V charger can recharge the removable battery in three to four hours.

There is a small monochromatic, circular LCD display on the left side of the handlebars that shows speed, range, pedal assist strength, and total distance traveled on the bike. There is also an app that can send turn-by-turn directions to this screen. The app is relatively basic and I ended up never using it aside from setting the bike’s class to align with my local city and state guidelines. There is also a lumen front light and a rear light that is brake-activated, even when the lights are switched off.

The RX’s single rear DC hub motor’s pick up is gradual, but once you are in the 20mph range it can really kick up to its top speed of 32mph in a hurry, and it peaks at watts of power. There are front and rear shocks that allow for preload, compression, and rebound adjustments. And when paired with the large, custom five-inch wide Super73 tires, the bike cruises over bumps, cracks, and potholes with ease.

I do wish the throttle was a bit harder to press. When going over a bump, my hand would jump a bit which caused my thumb to also jump on and off the throttle and therefore cut some of the power to the motor. It even proved painful when I was on some very dry paths and a quick, accidental acceleration sent me one way as the bike skidded out the other.

The frame of the Super73 RX is made from aircraft-grade and aluminum alloy. It feels very rugged. I kept a chain lock wrapped around the front of the frame, and even with it bouncing and slamming against the bike’s frame, no dents or scratches were left behind. There are also ample mounts for rigging accessories to almost any part of the frame and fenders on both tires. And there are a mess of wires on the front, semi-hidden behind a plastic plate, that then run through the frame to keep the whole bike looking clean.

All of these premium materials add up to a lot of weight. The RX is 80lbs of bike that you absolutely feel when you’re not using the hub motor to power it. I can’t imagine owning this bike and having to move it up any number of stairs.

I took the RX on a few dirt paths in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, and this is really where you can feel the power of that 2,watt motor and front and rear suspension. There is very little this bike won’t go over or up. But again, this is where the RX feels more like an electric dirt bike than a bicycle and where being able to handle 80lbs of bike might get rough if you don’t know what you’re doing. With the low handlebars and pushed-back seat position, the RX doesn’t make for a comfortable pedaling experience either, and using this bike in pedal assist mode only is very uncomfortable. But when using just the throttle, the bike feels really powerful.

The Super73 RX is as great to look at as it is to ride, and at $3, it better be. But its lack of built-in anti-theft features caused me great anxiety here in NYC. This bike is a total showstopper and therefore quite desirable. When parking it on the street, I would remove the pound battery with the included key then lock it up using both a chain lock and U-lock. Even then, I would still be nervous about someone running away with it. I wish Super73 offered better theft protection options out of the box, like VanMoof, or made the bike only able to be powered via a key, like Juiced.

And while Super73 claims the battery can be recharged 1, times over, the one-year hardware warranty is confusing and currently most replacements parts are unavailable via the company’s site. It’s a big investment with little certainty that it will be easily repairable. But if you’re willing to risk all of that, and trust in the good parts Super73 uses on its e-bikes, then you will have an absolute blast busting around on this bike.

Super 73’s RX is just as fun for running errands as it is to take on the trails, that is if you’re not pedaling and instead using the thumb throttle. It feels solid underneath you and can kick up to high speeds for long periods of time on a single charge. But this e-bike is far less of a peddling bike and way more of a throttle bike, which can be hard to get used to if you are coming from a biking background or looking to get any form of exercise while riding. It is also one of the more expensive models of e-bike within this spec range, so it will be important to have a clear purpose before investing in this electric dirt bike.
