Behavioral Health Care

MercyOne Behavioral Health Care provides hope and help for individuals struggling with mental health illness and substance abuse problems. The professional staff is understanding and completely confidential in working with patients and their families.

Clive Behavioral Health, in partnership with MercyOne and Universal Health Services, is a new facility offering inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services for adults and children. It is the first freestanding behavioral health hospital in Iowa to provide critically needed care for Iowans.

Adult Services

Finding the balance among your emotional, physical, spiritual and mental health is essential for your overall health and well-being. If you’re struggling to find the proper balance in your life, contact the professionals at MercyOne Behavioral Health Care.

MercyOne utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach – coordinating patient treatment with medical care – to provide individuals with the most effective treatment possible. Professional teams consist of board-certified and /or eligible psychiatrists, certified psychiatric nurses, licensed mental health counselors and licensed social workers.

Depression

Depression is a serious mental health illness that can disrupt an individual’s professional, social and physical health. Signs of this common disorder include sleeping too much or too little; loss of interest in activities, friends and family; difficulty concentrating or making decisions; feelings of hopelessness and guilt; and/or preoccupation with death or thoughts of suicide.

Fortunately, depression can be treated successfully, with either medication, counseling, TMS therapy, or a combination. The professionals at MercyOne Des Moines are experts in helping people cope with and relieve the difficulties associated with depression.

Anxiety

People who suffer from anxiety find themselves feeling uneasy, fearful and worried about real or perceived threats to their safety or well-being. Symptoms of anxiety include tension, rapid heartbeat, difficulty concentrating or falling asleep and irritability. Safe and effective treatment options – including relaxation techniques, dietary changes, increased exercise, medications and psychotherapy – are available at MercyOne.

Stress

Stress is a natural response to danger or demands which can become harmful to your physical and mental health if it becomes overwhelming and not managed properly. Signs of stress include nervousness, changes in sleeping or eating, lack of energy, confusion, muscle tension, mood changes and headaches. The team of experts at MercyOne can offer treatment, advice and referrals to help improve stress-related problems.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a treatable psychiatric illness that causes extreme mood swings, ranging from periods of excessive happiness, increased energy and activity, racing thoughts and rapid talking to periods of depression with decreased energy, fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, guilt and worthlessness and increased irritability. The professionals at MercyOne are specially trained to help patients manage the symptoms of this disorder through proper medication and psychotherapy.

Child and Adolescent Services

Seeking treatment for children or adolescents struggling with psychiatric, substance abuse or other behavioral health problems can be confusing and difficult for many parents. At MercyOne Behavioral Health Care, your family will encounter friendly, reassuring staff prepared to provide your child with effective treatment options and positive outcomes.

Parents searching for answers can trust the professionals at MercyOne Behavioral Health Care. The multidisciplinary team – including a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, nurses, social workers, case managers, psychiatric technicians and substance abuse counselors – work together to identify your child’s needs, define a treatment plan and offer the best care in the least restrictive manner possible.

Teen Suicide

Young adults experiencing depression, displaying aggressive or disruptive behavior and/or under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be at an increased risk for suicidal thoughts and action. Intervention by a concerned adult lets teens know that people care about them and are concerned for their well-being. The professionals at MercyOne are dedicated to helping young adults and can provide treatment and counseling during these difficult times

Understanding ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a medical condition that causes children, teens and some adults to have difficulty paying attention and controlling their actions. ADHD is a biological disorder that appears to be genetically or developmentally based, with symptoms often beginning at birth. Symptoms of ADHD include:

  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fidgeting with hands or feet
  • Difficulty staying seated
  • Talking excessively
  • Difficulty listening
  • Easily distracted
  • Difficulty following instruction

Treating ADHD

The professionals at MercyOne Behavioral HealthCare are experts in treating ADHD in children and young adults. Treatment options include behavior modification, counseling and educational planning with schools. In addition, stimulant and non-stimulant medications may be prescribed to help patients by improving their attention span, decreasing the ability to become easily distracted, increasing the ability to listen and follow directions, and improving the ability to control their actions. Dosages and frequency of medication will vary depending on the specific needs of each individual child.

Child-Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides an intense, structured, group setting for treatment of individuals who have difficulty maintaining their daily routines or who would otherwise require inpatient psychiatric treatment.   A thorough assessment can be completed to determine if PHP is the appropriate level of care.  PHP can be an entry point from outpatient treatment to stabilize symptoms, or as a transition from inpatient treatment.

A good candidate for the PHP program has:

  • An acute psychiatric disorder BUT is not at imminent risk for suicide or harm to others
  • The capacity to fully participate
  • A reasonable expectation of improvement
  • Transportation to and from the program daily

Program Details

The program runs five days a week, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with an hour for lunch. The average length of the program for each patient is 4 to 6 days. Each patient will be seen and evaluated by a psychiatrist and medications will be prescribed if indicated.

Patients can expect the following to occur each day:

  • Orientation for new participants
  • A group meeting to develop and review the daily schedule
  • Review of progress in treatment goals
  • Address concerns or challenges in meeting goals

Program Focus

  • Help improve coping skills, stress management, problem solving
  • Improve self-esteem
  • Develop more effective communication skills
  • Education about diagnosis, medications, symptom management

Coordination of Care

During treatment, staff will assist in developing discharge plans that will include follow up treatment and aftercare.

Did you know the longer one lasts in a chronic state of anxiety, the dire the need for treatment becomes? Anxiety can result in emotional paralysis- or a feeling of not being able to move due to multiple brain tabs open. How do we treat anxiety and other mood struggles? Research suggests talk therapy is the first line treatment for negative mood episodes. However, medications may be an additional tool and can be an option for you. "Do you suffer from depression and medication has not helped reduce your symptoms? Deep TMS therapy at Achieve TMS Central might be the answer you are looking for. Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) is an innovative treatment that offers lasting relief from depression symptoms. Deep TMS therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate the brain to improve the symptoms of depression. Some of the benefits of deep TMS therapy are: it’s a non-medication treatment, non-invasive, in-office with no anesthesia, fewer side effects, and has a high remission and response rates. dTMS has also been shown to have none of the side effects that are commonly seen in antidepressant treatment.
