Where to dine on the east side of Des Moines

Sure, you may stuff your face with Bauder’s peppermint bars, pork chops on a stick and more corn dogs than you can imagine, but after you leave the Iowa State Fair, you may just want to stick around the east side of Des Moines to discover the dining scene there.

Italian landmark Tursi’s Latin King anchors this side of town at the corner of Hubbell and University avenues, while soul food queen Pamela Patton dishes out the fried chicken. Good home cooking lights up The Home Plate Diner right across the street from the fairgrounds, while the Hilltop dishes out Italian-American fare. Satisfy a craving for Asian food at Thai Flavors, Rolling Wok or Tsing Tsao.

Here is a look at 10 restaurants on the east side of Des Moines worth a stop before or after the Iowa State Fair, which runs Aug. 11-21.

Order the chicken spiedini salad with a glass of white wine at Tursi's Latin King restaurant in Des Moines.
