The Mercenaries' Guild first becomes available in the second system. It costs 30, credits to join the guild which then gets you access to their missions, commodity market, equipment and shipyard. In general the Mercenaries have good combat-based ships and their Webcore Plating takes reduced damage from explosive weapons like missiles which can be a critical factor in some scenarios such as minefields.

This is getting too hot for me! - Best mercenary?
I'm still in the first sector and so far I've met 2 mercenaries. Is this going to continue? As in: you get 2 mercenaries per sector, one cheap, one more expensive. I assume you can't take a mercenary from one sector to the other? Otherwise I could go to the next sector, get a better merc and take him to the first sector

Also, what do they mean when they say "this is getting too hot for me"? It doesn't seem he actually leaves the scene. So is this sound being played when he takes some damage? Or does he retreat a little? Can he even die?

I haven't been using Mercs because I'm always strapped for cash in this game. Are they worth the investment? Browsing the steam forum they seam to be a bit buggy (suiciding into planets, fighting enemies instead of disengaging when you flee).

Also do they only pilot fighters or do they get bigger ships? Considering how fast I can take down most fighters, wouldn't they be taken down just as fast by enemies?

I haven't gotten far in the story yet, but the mercs I've hired above 30k deal some damage. I haven't seen them fly bigger ships than small Gunships.

The main thing for me about them is that they draw some fire away from my ship at times which can be helpful. I'd rather lose a merc than the pay for a mission if given the choice. :)

I've definitely found them to be worth it and haven't had much trouble with weird AI. They don't really cost all that much for how much damage they're capable of delivering. There's a small chance that they might get blown up, but that seems to be an extremely rare thing.

Also, Sparrow is awesome because she just constantly says "boyo" in great accent.

I've found the mercenaries to be well worth the investment. Especially since they can live virtually forever unless you get yourself into a really lopsided battle. I spent 35k on a mercenary and she was with me over the course of at least 7 or 8 hours of gameplay until I released her and hired a different one.

I think mercs are one of the best investments you can make, at least early on.

Way better bang for your buck than any piece of equipment you can buy at basically any point during the game.

Yeah, mercs are a lot of bang for the buck. But they're finicky to control. I've experienced both issues you've talked about (suiciding into planets and kamikaze behavior); the first happens if you exit warp just before hitting a planet, the second happens because there's no AI for fleeing a battle, just withdrawing until shields recharge. You can solve the second issue by either warping out of battle (they'll retreat when you do) or making sure to stick by your merc and cover him.

Thanks for the tips. I will give it a try tonite. Just didn't feel like throwing away money on something that seem so vulnerable. Same reason I don't use any missiles cause they cost money to reload.

Now with Rebel Galaxy, you’re in control of an enormous destroyer, bristling with weaponry, firing massive broadside volleys, burning holes in cruisers, and bringing down fighters by the score. Fragile Alliances

The universe isn’t empty – it’s filled with a cast of weird, untrustworthy, endearing, or downright hostile characters.

This Isn’t a Strategy Game

Rebel Galaxy has been designed from the outset for spaceship combat action.

It’s not about clicking and issuing orders. It’s about feeling the concussion of a broadside blast, and the impact on your deflectors as they absorb a particle beam meant for your shield generator.

Zoom in to control an individual turret and blast incoming torpedoes out of the sky. Lock onto a series of targets and let a fan of image-recognition missiles take them out in a pyrotechnic display. Protect your wounded side in a last desperate bid to make warp distance. Take a breath when it’s over.

But it pays to think, too

It’s not action-only around here. A shrewd player can take a very different approach. Hire a mercenary or two, set your turrets to custom AI stances, and talk your way out of a scrap.

Hang out in the bar, and you might get a hot tip about a relief vessel sent to a world wracked by famine. A smart trader might want to get there first, and offload a few tons of meat while the price is right. An unscrupulous one might make sure the relief vessel never arrives at all.
